Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

The invention provides certain nicotine salts, co-crystals, and salt co-crystals and provides novel polymorphic forms of certain nicotine salts. In particular, nicotine salts with mucic acid, 3,5-dihydroxybenzoic acid, and 2,3-dihydroxybenzoic acid, and crystalline polymorphic forms of nicotine 4-acetamidobenzoate, nicotine gentisate, and nicotine 1-hydroxy-2-naphthoate are described. The invention further provides methods of preparation and characterization of such nicotine salts, co-crystals, and salt co-crystals and polymorphic forms thereof. In addition, tobacco products, including smoking articles, smokeless tobacco products, and electronic smoking articles comprising nicotine salts, co-crystals, and/or salt co-crystals are also provided.

What is claimed: 1. An electronic smoking article comprising an inhalable substance medium contained within a cartridge body and a heating member positioned to provide heat to at least a portion of the inhalable substance medium, wherein the inhalable substance medium comprises a salt of nicotine and 2,3-dihydroxybenzoic acid, wherein the salt of nicotine and 2,3-dihydroxybenzoic acid is characterized by an X-ray powder diffraction pattern having peaks at one or more of the following 2-theta diffraction angles: 12.4, 12.5, 15.2, 18.3, 19.7, 20.3, 20.9, 24.9, 25.2, 26.5, and 30.4. 2. The electronic smoking article of claim 1 , wherein the inhalable substance medium further comprises a polyhydric alcohol. 3. The electronic smoking article of claim 2 , wherein the polyhydric alcohol is selected from glycerin, propylene glycol, or a combination thereof. 4. The electronic smoking article of claim 1 , wherein the inhalable substance medium further comprises water. 5. The electronic smoking article of claim 1 , wherein the inhalable substance medium further comprises a flavorant. 6. The electronic smoking article of claim 5 , wherein the flavorant comprises menthol. 7. The electronic smoking article of claim 5 , wherein the flavorant comprises an organic acid. 8. The electronic smoking article of claim 7 , wherein the organic acid is selected from levulinic acid, succinic acid, pyruvic acid, and combinations thereof. 9. The electronic smoking article of claim 1 , wherein the inhalable substance medium further comprises an acid component. 10. The electronic smoking article of claim 9 , wherein the acid component is selected from tartaric acid, ascorbic acid, fumaric acid, citric acid, malic acid, lactic acid, aspartic acid, salicylic acid, 4-amino salicylic acid, N-acetyl-4-aminosalicylic acid, p-toluenesulfonic acid, succinic acid, pyruvic acid, formic acid, acetic acid, propionic acid, isobutyric acid, butyric acid, alpha-methylbutyric acid, 2-ketobutyric acid, isovaleric acid, beta-methylvaleric acid, caproic acid, 2-furoic acid, phenylacetic acid, heptanoic acid, octanoic acid, nonanoic acid, oxalic acid, malonic acid, glycolic acid, levulinic acid, 4-aminobenzoic acid, 4-acetamidobenzoic acid, 3-hydroxybenzoic acid, 2,5-dihydroxybenzoic acid, 2,3-dihydroxybenzoic acid, 2,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid, 3,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid, vanillic acid, mucic acid, cyclamic acid, benzenesulfonic acid, 2-hydroxyethanesulfonic acid, 1-hydroxy-2-naphthoic acid, ketoglutaric acid, D-glucuronic acid, maleic acid, glutamic acid, L-pyroglutamic acid, nicotinic acid, isonicotinic acid, gallic acid, phthalic acid, mandelic acid, hippuric acid, cinnamic acid, adipic acid, orotic acid, sorbic acid, clofibric acid, tauric acid, and combinations thereof. 11. The electronic smoking article of claim 1 , wherein the inhalable substance medium further comprises a syrup. 12. The electronic smoking article of claim 1 , wherein the inhalable substance medium further comprises one or more of glycerin, water, and a flavorant. 13. The electronic smoking article of claim 1 , wherein the amount of the salt is that amount sufficient to provide nicotine in an amount of about 0.01 mg to about 0.5 mg per puff on the article. 14. The electronic smoking article of claim 1 , wherein the amount of the salt is that amount sufficient to provide nicotine in an amount of about 0.05 mg to about 1 mg per puff on the article. 15.
