A vehicle control system is disclosed for modifying vehicle operation and includes an engine control unit having at least one processor. A vehicle network is provided as well as a first handheld wireless device having a GPS module, a local wireless communication module, and a distance wireless communication module. A gauge has a wireless communication module operable to communicate with the first handheld wireless device and at least one display for communicating information to a user regarding vehicle operating parameters. Memory accessible by the processor and memory having software stored thereon are provided, the software being configured for execution by the processor and including instructions for providing a boundary map within which the vehicle may operate under normal operating conditions. The vehicle is placed in a degraded operating mode if the vehicle moves outside of the boundary.

What is claimed is: 1. A vehicle control system for modifying operation of a vehicle, comprising: at least one processor; and a memory accessible by the processor and having software stored thereon, that, when executed by the at least one processor, causes the vehicle control system to perform a set of operations comprising: receiving, from a handheld device, a compliance indication that indicates compliance with a set of conditions; based on receiving the compliance indication from the handheld device, causing driving of the vehicle under a normal mode of vehicle operation; determining the compliance indication is no longer received from the handheld device; and in response to determining the compliance indication is no longer received, causing driving of the vehicle under a degraded mode of vehicle operation. 2. The vehicle control system of claim 1 , wherein: the set of conditions includes a boundary map; and the compliance indication indicates the handheld device is located inside of the boundary map, thereby causing the vehicle to drive according to the normal mode of vehicle operation. 3. The vehicle control system of claim 1 , wherein the degraded mode of vehicle operation includes a predetermined maximum speed limit for the vehicle. 4. The vehicle control system of claim 3 , wherein causing driving of the vehicle under the degraded mode of operation comprises controlling a throttle setting of the vehicle to limit speed according to the predetermined maximum speed limit. 5. The vehicle control system of claim 1 , wherein determining the compliance indication is no longer received comprises one of: receiving, from the handheld device, an indication that the set of conditions is not satisfied; or determining a compliance indication has not been received from the handheld device after a predetermined amount of time has elapsed. 6. The vehicle control system of claim 1 , wherein: it is determined that the compliance indication is no longer received from the handheld device after not receiving the compliance indication from the handheld device within a predetermined time period, thereby causing the vehicle to drive according to the degraded mode of vehicle operation; and the set of operations further comprises: reestablishing communication with the handheld device, thereby receiving the compliance indication from the handheld device; and in response to reestablishing communication with the handheld device, resuming driving of the vehicle under the normal mode of vehicle operation. 7. The vehicle control system of claim 1 , wherein the handheld device is a smartphone of an operator of the vehicle. 8. A method for controlling a vehicle based on a handheld device, the method comprising: receiving, from the handheld device, a compliance indication that indicates compliance with a set of conditions; based on receiving the compliance indication from the handheld device, causing driving of the vehicle under a normal mode of vehicle operation; determining the compliance indication is no longer received from the handheld device; and in response to determining the compliance indication is no longer received, causing driving of the vehicle under a degraded mode of vehicle operation. 9. The method of claim 8 , wherein: the set of conditions includes a boundary map; and the compliance indication indicates the handheld device is located inside of the boundary map, thereby causing the vehicle to drive according to the normal mode of vehicle operation. 10. The method of claim 8 , wherein the degraded mode of vehicle operation includes a predetermined maximum speed limit for the vehicle. 11. The method of claim 10 , wherein causing driving of the vehicle under the degraded mode of operation comprises controlling a throttle setting of the vehicle to limit speed according to the predetermined maximum speed limit. 12. The method of claim 8 , wherein determining the compliance indication is no longer received comprises one of: receiving, from the handheld device, an indication that the set of conditions is not satisfied; or determining a compliance indication has not been received from the handheld device after a predetermined amount of time has elapsed. 13. The method of claim 8 , wherein: it is determined that the compliance indication is no longer received from the handheld device after not receiving the compliance indication from the handheld device within a predetermined time period, thereby causing the vehicle to drive according to the degraded mode of vehicle operation; and the method further comprises: reestablishing communication with the handheld device, thereby receiving the compliance indication from the handheld device; and in response to reestablishing communication with the handheld device, resuming driving of the vehicle under the normal mode of vehicle operation. 14. The method of claim 8 , wherein the handheld device is a smartphone of an operator of the vehicle. 15. A vehicle, comprising: a plurality of ground-engaging members; a frame supported by the plurality of ground-engaging members; a controller supported by the frame, the controller comprising: at least one processor; and memory storing instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the controller to perform a set of operations, the set of operations comprising: receiving, from a handheld device, a compliance indication that indicates compliance with a set of conditions; based on receiving the compliance indication from the handheld device, causing driving of the vehicle under a normal mode of vehicle operation; determining the compliance indication is no longer received from the handheld device; and in response to determining the compliance indication is no longer received, causing driving of the vehicle under a degraded mode of vehicle operation. 16. The vehicle of claim 15 , wherein: the set of conditions includes a boundary map; and the compliance indication indicates the handheld device is located inside of the boundary map, thereby causing the vehicle to drive according to the normal mode of vehicle operation. 17. The vehicle of claim 15 , wherein the degraded mode of vehicle operation includes a predetermined maximum speed limit for the vehicle. 18. The vehicle of claim 17 , wherein causing driving of the vehicle under the degraded mode of operation comprises controlling a throttle setting of the vehicle to limit speed according to the predetermined maximum speed limit. 19. The vehicle of claim 15 , wherein determining the compliance indication is no longer received comprises one of: receiving, from the handheld device, an indication that the set of conditions is not satisfied; or determining a compliance indication has not been received from the handheld device after a predetermined amount of time has elapsed. 20. The vehicle of claim 15 , wherein the handheld device is a smartphone of an operator of the vehicle.
