Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A suture device for use in combination with a delivery system including a lumen extending through the delivery system includes a needle usable to carry a suture, a distal shuttle configured to releasably secure the needle, a sleeve disposable over the distal shuttle, the distal shuttle movable relative to the sleeve between a locked position in which the needle is locked to the distal shuttle and an unlocked position in which the needle is releasable from the distal shuttle. A shaft is operably coupled to the sleeve and a control wire is operably coupled to the distal shuttle. A needle may include a needle cap.

What is claimed is: 1. A suture device for use in combination with a delivery device having a delivery lumen and a distal end including a distal assembly, the suture device comprising: a needle configured to carry a suture, the needle including a distalmost end along a distal region configured to releasably engage the distal assembly of the suture device, and a proximal region configured to releasably engage a suture translation assembly of the suture device proximally spaced apart from the distal assembly; and a protective needle cap configured to releasably fit over the distalmost end of the needle when the needle is not engaged with the distal assembly of the suture device, the needle cap having a needle cap body defining a void that is configured to releasably receive the distalmost end of the needle therein, and an atraumatic distal tip configured to extend over the distalmost end of the needle to cover and shield the distalmost end of the needle; wherein the protective needle cap is configured to be pushed distally away from and off the needle and off and separated from the suture device so that the distalmost end of the needle may be engaged with the distal assembly of the suture device. 2. The suture device of claim 1 , further comprising a sleeve disposable over the suture translation assembly, the sleeve movable between a locked position in which the needle is secured to the suture translation assembly, and an unlocked position in which the needle is releasable from the suture translation assembly. 3. The suture device of claim 1 , wherein one or more slots extend axially along the needle cap body of the protective needle cap. 4. The suture device of claim 3 , wherein the one or more slots are elongate slots extending axially along the cylindrical needle cap body. 5. The suture device of claim 4 , wherein the one or more slots provide flexibility to the protective needle cap to flex to be advanced onto the needle. 6. The suture device of claim 3 , wherein the protective needle cap further comprises one or more convex protuberances extending into the void, the one or more convex protuberances configured to fit into a detent in the needle. 7. The suture device of claim 1 , wherein the needle includes a distal detent near the distalmost end thereof, and the protective needle cap further comprises one or more convex protuberances extending into the void and configured to fit into the distal detent of the needle. 8. The suture device of claim 1 , wherein the protective needle cap is capable of splitting upon contacting an endcap of the suture device to be removed from the needle. 9. The suture device of claim 1 , wherein the protective needle cap body is cylindrical. 10. The suture device of claim 1 , wherein the protective needle cap body has flared sides. 11. The suture device of claim 10 , wherein the flared sides of the protective needle cap body are compressible for delivery. 12. The suture device of claim 1 , wherein: the suture translation assembly is configured to extend through the delivery lumen of the delivery device and to releasably secure the needle; and the distal assembly is configured to releasably engage and disengage the needle; and the needle is configured to be passed through tissue and transferred between the suture translation assembly and the distal assembly.
