A suture trimmer having a shaft, a cutting member, an actuating device, and a snare. The shaft has a first end and a second end and bounds a bore extending from the first end toward the second end. The shaft has an opening formed in a side adjacent the first end. The cutting member is slidably disposed within the bore of the shaft and can be moved between a first position and a second position, such that when disposed in the second position the cutting member closes the opening formed in the side of the shaft. The actuating device is in communication with the cutting member and is operable to move the cutting member from the first position to the second position. The snare extends through the opening and out of the bore at the first end of the shaft.

What is claimed is: 1. A device for advancing a suture knot, the device comprising: a flexible shaft having a first end, a second end, and a lumen extending therebetween, the flexible shaft having an opening formed in a side adjacent the first end; a fitting disposed on the first end of the flexible shaft, the fitting having a channel formed therethrough, the channel axially aligned with the lumen of the flexible shaft adjacent the first end and in communication with the opening formed in the flexible shaft, the fitting further including a protrusion extending through the lumen of the flexible shaft and connected to a housing; and a cutting member slidably disposed within the lumen of the flexible shaft, the cutting member being configured to be moved between a first position and a second position, such that when disposed in the second position the cutting member closes the opening formed in the side of the flexible shaft an actuating device in communication with a cutting member and operable to move the cutting member between the first position and the second position. 2. The device of claim 1 , wherein the flexible shaft is formed from a material selected from the group consisting of: thermoplastics, metals, and elastomers. 3. The device of claim 1 , wherein the flexible shaft is sized such that the first end is able to reach a cardiovascular treatment site when disposed within the patient. 4. A device for advancing a suture knot, the device comprising: a shaft having a first end, a second end, and a lumen extending therebetween, the shaft having an opening formed in a side adjacent the first end; a fitting disposed on the first end of the shaft, the fitting having a channel formed therethrough, the fitting further including a protrusion extending through the lumen of the shaft and connected to a housing; a cutting member slidably disposed within the lumen of the shaft, the cutting member being configured to be moved between a first position and a second position, such that when disposed in the second position the cutting member closes the opening formed in the side of the shaft; and an actuating device in communication with the cutting member and operable to move the cutting member from the first position toward the second position. 5. The device according to claim 4 , wherein the first end is configured to receive and advance at least one knot formed with a suture. 6. The device according to claim 4 , further comprising a biasing device coupled to the cutting member to retain the cutting member in the first position. 7. The device according to claim 4 , wherein the shaft is constructed of a bio-compatible material or a metal coated with a bio-compatible coating. 8. The device according to claim 4 , wherein the shaft is flexible. 9. The device according to claim 4 , wherein a distal end of the cutting member includes a sharpened edge configured to cut a suture passed through a portion of the lumen and through the opening formed in the shaft. 10. The device according to claim 4 , further comprising a snare extending through the opening and out of the lumen at the first end of the shaft, the snare being comprised of a metal wire. 11. The device according to claim 10 , wherein the snare has a diamond shaped portion. 12. The device according to claim 10 , wherein the snare comprises a nickel-titanium alloy. 13. The device according to claim 10 , further comprising a snare housing removably coupled to the shaft, the snare being secured to the snare housing.
