Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A tethering screw system includes a bone screw, a fastening member, and a securing member. The bone screw includes a threaded shank and a head portion. The head portion includes inner walls defining a slot and a recess distal of the slot. The fastening member is received in the recess of the head portion of the bone screw. The securing member has an engaging portion and a set screw rotatably coupled with the engaging portion. The engaging portion is configured to secure the fastening member in the recess of the head portion. The set screw is configured to threadably engage the inner walls of the head portion of bone screw, wherein when the set screw threadably engages the inner walls of the head portion of the bone screw, the engaging portion advances relative to the fastening member to secure the fastening member in the recess of the head portion.

What is claimed is: 1. A tethering screw system comprising: a bone fastener having a head portion including inner walls defining a slot; a flexible band; and a securing member having an engaging portion and a set screw rotatably coupled with the engaging portion, the set screw configured to threadably engage the inner walls of the head portion of the bone fastener to advance the engaging portion distally to secure the flexible band between an engaging surface of the engaging portion and a distal end of the slot, wherein the slot is configured to prevent rotation of the engaging portion while the engaging portion advances distally within the slot, and wherein the engaging portion includes a first curved relief sloping proximally from the engaging surface toward a first planar side surface and a second curved relief sloping proximally from the engaging surface toward a second planar side surface, and wherein at least a portion of the engaging surface is planar. 2. The tethering screw system of claim 1 , wherein a cross-section of the engaging portion along a plane perpendicular to a rotational axis of the set screw has a rectangular profile. 3. The tethering screw system of claim 1 , wherein the engaging portion and set screw are coupled through a post. 4. The tethering screw system of claim 3 , wherein an end of the post includes a lip. 5. The tethering screw system of claim 1 , wherein the distal end of the slot includes a recess having a cross-section complementary to a cross-section of the flexible band. 6. The tethering screw system of claim 1 , wherein the first planar side surface is configured to contact a surface of the slot to prevent rotation of the engaging portion. 7. The tethering screw system of claim 6 , wherein the engaging portion includes a third side surface oriented orthogonally to the first planar side surface, the first planar side surface having a greater length than the second planar side surface. 8. The tethering screw system of claim 1 , wherein the second curved relief has a greater length than the first curved relief. 9. The tethering screw system of claim 8 , wherein the first curved relief extends orthogonally to the second curved relief. 10. The tethering screw system of claim 1 , wherein the first curved relief opposes the second curved relief. 11. The tethering screw system of claim 1 , wherein the engaging surface is positioned to contact the flexible band upon distal advancement of the engaging portion. 12. A tethering screw system comprising: a bone fastener having a head portion including inner walls defining a slot; a flexible band; and a securing member having an engaging portion and a set screw rotatably coupled with the engaging portion by a post, the set screw configured to threadably engage the inner walls of the head portion of the bone fastener to advance the engaging portion distally to secure the flexible band between an engaging surface of the engaging portion and a distal end of the slot, wherein the engaging portion has a first dimension and a second dimension, the first dimension being greater than the second dimension, and wherein the engaging portion includes at least one planar side surface, the engaging surface having a planar surface and an entire perimeter of the engaging surface is radiused, and wherein an entire cross-section of the engaging portion coplanar with the planar surface within the perimeter defines a continuous shape. 13. The tethering screw system of claim 12 , wherein a cross-section of the engaging portion along a plane perpendicular to a rotational axis of the set screw has a rectangular profile. 14. The tethering screw system of claim 12 , wherein an end of the post includes a lip. 15. The tethering screw system of claim 12 , wherein the distal end of the slot includes a recess having a cross-section complementary to a cross-section of the flexible band. 16. The tethering screw system of claim 12 , wherein the planar side surface is configured to contact a surface of the slot to prevent rotation of the engaging portion. 17. The tethering screw system of claim 16 , wherein the engaging portion includes a second side surface oriented orthogonally to the planar side surface, the planar side surface having a greater length than the second side surface. 18. The tethering screw system of claim 12 , wherein the radiused perimeter slopes proximally from the engaging surface. 19. A tethering screw system comprising: a bone fastener having a head portion including inner walls defining a slot; a flexible band; and a securing member having an engaging portion and a set screw rotatably coupled with the engaging portion by a post, the set screw configured to threadably engage the inner walls of the head portion of the bone fastener to advance the engaging portion distally to secure the flexible band between an engaging surface of the engaging portion and a distal end of the slot, wherein the engaging portion includes a first relief sloping proximally from the engaging surface toward a first planar side surface and a second relief sloping proximally from the engaging surface toward a second planar side surface, wherein a plane is defined between the first relief and the second relief and an entire cross-section of the engaging portion defines a continuous shape along the plane, and wherein the engaging surface includes a planar surface between the first and second reliefs.
