What is claimed is: 1. An optical link for data communications between optical transmitters and optical receivers, comprising: an optical transmitter array having a plurality of microLEDs and each microLED configured to generate light; an input array optical coupling assembly having one or more lenses and/or mirrors for relaying light from each microLED; a coherent fiber bundle having a plurality of cores, the coherent fiber bundle having an input face opposite to an output face and the input face configured to receive light from each microLED that are relayed by the input array optical coupling assembly to reproduce said light at the output face as spatially-sampled at the input face an output array optical coupling assembly having one or more lenses and/or mirrors; and an optical receiver array having a plurality of photodetectors configured to receive light relayed by the output array optical coupling assembly from the output face of the coherent fiber bundle; wherein each microLED of the plurality of microLEDs of the optical transmitter array is coupled to a single core of the plurality of cores of the coherent fiber bundle at the input face; and wherein each photodetector of the plurality of photodetectors is coupled to a single core of the plurality of cores of the coherent fiber bundle at the output face. 2. The optical link of claim 1 , wherein the optical transmitter array is of a first optical transceiver associated with a first semiconductor chip. 3. The optical link of claim 2 , wherein the optical receiver array is of a second optical transceiver associated with a second semiconductor chip. 4. The optical link of claim 3 , wherein the plurality of photodetectors of the optical receiver array is monolithically integrated with receiver circuitry on the second semiconductor chip. 5. The optical link of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of microLEDs is attached to a first substrate. 6. The optical link of claim 5 , wherein the plurality of photodetectors is mounted to a second substrate. 7. The optical link of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of microLEDs is mounted to an IC that also includes microLED drive circuitry. 8. The optical link of claim 1 , wherein the input array optical coupling assembly is configured to magnify light from each microLED on the input face of the coherent fiber bundle. 9. The optical link of claim 1 , wherein the optical transmitter array further comprises drive circuitry for driving the plurality of microLEDs. 10. The optical link of claim 9 , wherein the optical receiver array further comprises receiver circuitry. 11. The optical link of claim 1 , wherein the coherent fiber bundle is made from multimode fibers. 12. An optical link for data communications between optical transmitters and optical receivers, comprising: an optical transmitter array having a plurality of microLEDs and each microLED configured to generate light; an input array optical coupling assembly having one or more lenses and/or mirrors for relaying light from each microLED; a coherent fiber bundle having a plurality of cores, the coherent fiber bundle having an input face opposite to an output face and the input face configured to receive light from each microLED that are relayed by the input array optical coupling assembly to reproduce said light at the output face as spatially-sampled at the input face an output array optical coupling assembly having one or more lenses and/or mirrors; and an optical receiver array having a plurality of photodetectors configured to receive light relayed by the output array optical coupling assembly from the output face of the coherent fiber bundle; wherein each microLED of the plurality of microLEDs of the optical transmitter array is coupled to multiple cores of the plurality of cores of the coherent fiber bundle at the input face.
