Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Vehicles may have the capability to navigate according to various levels of autonomous capabilities, the vehicle having a different set of autonomous competencies at each level. In certain situations, the vehicle may shift from one level of autonomous capability to another. The shift may require more or less driving responsibility from a human operator. Sensors inside the vehicle collect human operator parameters to determine an alertness level of the human operator. An alertness level is determined based on the human operator parameters and other data including historical data or human operator-specific data. Notifications are presented to the user based on the determined alertness level that are more or less intrusive based on the alertness level of the human operator and on the urgency of an impending change to autonomous capabilities. Notifications may be tailored to specific human operators based on human operator preference and historical performance.

What is claimed: 1. A method of transitioning control of a vehicle, the method comprising: navigating a vehicle according to a first level of autonomous capability, the first level of autonomous capability defining a first set of autonomous competencies of the vehicle; receiving a request to operate the vehicle according to a second level of autonomous capability within a time period, the second level of autonomous capability defining a second set of autonomous competencies, the second set of autonomous competencies being different than the first set of autonomous competencies; notifying a human operator of the vehicle with a notification of an impending change in vehicle capability to the second level of autonomous capability, the notification depending at least in part on differences between the first set of autonomous competencies and the second set of autonomous competencies and an alertness level of the human operator, the notification indicating the time period within which the vehicle will make the impending change, wherein a user intrusiveness level of the notification corresponds to a change in a level of driving responsibility associated with the impending change and to an urgency of the impending change, the user intrusiveness level of the notification being based at least in part on one or more of a change in proximity of a hazard to the vehicle or an urgency of the hazard; and navigating the vehicle according to the second level of autonomous capability. 2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the request to operate the vehicle according to a second level of autonomous capability is based on a communication from another autonomous vehicle. 3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the request to operate the vehicle according to a second level of autonomous capability is based on a set of in-vehicle sensors. 4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising: requesting human operator acknowledgement of the impending change to the second level of autonomous capability. 5. The method of claim 4 , further comprising: increasing a user intrusiveness of the notification in response to detecting a failure of the human operator to acknowledge the impending change to the second level of autonomous capability before expiration of the time period. 6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the notifying the human operator of the vehicle with the notification of the impending change in vehicle capability to the second level of autonomous capability comprises: notifying the human operator of a reduction in driving responsibilities. 7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the notifying the human operator of the vehicle with the notification of the impending change in vehicle capability to the second level of autonomous capability comprises: notifying the human operator of an increase in driving responsibilities. 8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the differences between the first set of autonomous competencies and the second set of autonomous competencies includes a difference regarding a level of autonomous control for an adaptive cruise control system of the vehicle. 9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the differences between the first set of autonomous competencies and the second set of autonomous competencies includes a difference regarding a level of autonomous control for a parking assist system of the vehicle. 10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the differences between the first set of autonomous competencies and the second set of autonomous competencies includes a difference regarding a level of autonomous control for a traffic jam assist system of the vehicle. 11. A system for transitioning between different levels of autonomous control of a vehicle, the system comprising: a vehicle; a control system for implementing autonomous control of the vehicle, the control system configured to: navigate the vehicle according to a first level of autonomous capability, the first level of autonomous capability defining a first set of autonomous competencies of the vehicle; receive a request to operate the vehicle according to a second level of autonomous capability within a time period, the second level of autonomous capability defining a second set of autonomous competencies, the second set of autonomous competencies being different than the first set of autonomous competencies; notify a human operator of the vehicle with a notification of an impending change in vehicle capability to the second level of autonomous capability, the notification depending at least in part on differences between the first set of autonomous competencies and the second set of autonomous competencies and an alertness level of the human operator the notification indicating the time period within which the vehicle will make the impending change, wherein a user intrusiveness level of the notification corresponds to a change in a level of driving responsibility associated with the impending change and to an urgency of the impending change, the user intrusiveness level of the notification being based at least in part on one or more of a change in proximity of a hazard to the vehicle or an urgency of the hazard; and navigate the vehicle according to the second level of autonomous capability. 12. The system of claim 11 , wherein the request to operate the vehicle according to the second level of autonomous capability is based on a communication from another autonomous vehicle. 13. The system of claim 11 , wherein the request to operate the vehicle according to the second level of autonomous capability is based on a set of in-vehicle sensors. 14. The system of claim 11 , wherein the control system is further configured to: request human operator acknowledgement of the impending change to the second level of autonomous capability. 15. The system of claim 14 , wherein the control system is further configured to: increase a user intrusiveness of the notification in response to detecting a failure of the human operator to acknowledge the impending change to the second level of autonomous capability before expiration of the time period. 16. The system of claim 11 , wherein the control system is configured to notify the human operator of the vehicle with the notification of the impending change in vehicle capability to the second level of autonomous capability in a manner that comprises causing the control system to: notify the human operator of a reduction in driving responsibilities. 17. The system of claim 11 , wherein the control system is configured to notify the human operator of the vehicle with the notification of the impending change in vehicle capability to the second level of autonomous capability in a manner that comprises causing the control system to: notify the human operator of an increase in driving responsibilities. 18. The system of claim 11 , wherein the differences between the first set of autonomous competencies and the second set of autonomous competencies includes a difference regarding a level of autonomous control for an adaptive cruise control system of the vehicle. 19. The system of claim 11 , wherein the differences between the first set of autonomous competencies and the second set of autonomous competencies includes a difference regarding a level of autonomous control for a parking assist system of the vehicle. 20. The system of claim 11 , wherein the differences between the first set of autonomous competencies and the second set of autonomous competencies includes a difference regarding a level of autonomous control for a traffic jam assi
