Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A system includes a reagent pack input carousel, a carousel frame supporting the carousel, and a track on which the carousel frame is supported for movement of the carousel into and out of an instrument in drawer-like fashion. The carousel is rotatable about an axis of rotation and includes a plurality of reagent pack input stations arranged about the perimeter of the carousel. Each input station is adapted to carry a reagent pack, and the input stations are oriented at an angle with respect to a radial orientation relative to the axis of rotation. Each input station includes an alignment block located at a radially inner end of the station, and the block is received within a recess formed in an end of the reagent pack placed in the station to align and position of the reagent pack within the station.

The invention claimed is: 1. A method comprising: receiving each of a plurality of reagent packs into each of a plurality of reagent pack input stations arranged about a perimeter of a rotatable reagent pack input carousel, wherein each of the plurality of reagent pack input stations is oriented at an angle with respect to a radial orientation relative to an axis of rotation of the reagent pack input carousel, maintaining alignment and position of each of the plurality of reagent packs within a corresponding one of the plurality of reagent pack input stations with an alignment block positioned at a first end of the corresponding reagent pack input station that is closer to the axis of rotation than a second end of the corresponding reagent pack input station, wherein the alignment block is configured to be received within a recess formed in an end of each of the plurality of reagent packs; and selectively sliding a carousel frame on which the reagent pack input carousel is supported out of an instrument in which the rotatable reagent pack input carousel is housed to enable user access to the reagent pack input carousel or into the instrument to enable instrument access to the reagent pack input carousel. 2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the angle is from 5° to 20°. 3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising using a code reader to read a machine code disposed on a side of each of the plurality of reagent packs disposed in one of the plurality of reagent pack input stations through a scanning slot opening formed in a carousel frame on which the reagent pack input carousel is supported. 4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the code reader comprises a bar code reader and the machine code comprises a bar code. 5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising using a home sensor adjacent to the reagent pack input carousel and a rotary encoder coupled to a motor that effects powered rotation of the reagent pack input carousel to detect when the reagent pack input carousel is at a specified rotational position with respect to a position of the home sensor. 6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising transferring one of the plurality of reagent packs from the corresponding reagent pack input station in the reagent pack input carousel through a reagent pack access slot formed in the carousel frame. 7. The method of claim 1 , wherein each of the plurality of reagent pack input stations comprises a pair of dividers between the reagent pack input station and each adjacent one of the plurality of reagent pack input stations. 8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the pair of dividers comprises a radial inner divider and a radial outer divider, and wherein a gap is situated between the radial inner divider and the radial outer divider of each pair of dividers. 9. The method of claim 7 , further comprising using a code reader to read a machine code on one of the pair of dividers of one of the plurality of reagent pack input stations when no reagent pack is disposed in the one reagent pack input station. 10. The method of claim 1 , further comprising, with a receptacle distribution system, transferring one of the plurality of reagent packs from the corresponding reagent pack input station in the reagent pack input carousel to a reagent pack storage carousel disposed within a reagent pack storage compartment, the reagent pack storage carousel being rotatable about an axis of rotation, wherein the reagent pack storage carousel includes a plurality of reagent pack storage stations disposed around the axis of rotation, each of the plurality of reagent pack storage stations being configured to hold one of the plurality of reagent packs. 11. The method of claim 10 , wherein the reagent pack input carousel is disposed above the reagent pack storage compartment when the carousel frame has been slid into the instrument, and the transferring step comprises: with a receptacle distributor of the receptacle distribution system withdrawing one of the plurality of reagent packs from the corresponding reagent pack input station in the reagent pack input carousel; moving the receptacle distributor vertically to a height corresponding to the reagent pack storage carousel; and with the receptacle distributor, inserting the one reagent pack into a corresponding one of the plurality of reagent pack storage stations in the reagent pack storage carousel. 12. The method of claim 11 , further comprising maintaining the reagent pack storage compartment at a temperature that is lower than an ambient temperature. 13. The method of claim 12 , further comprising controlling humidity within the reagent pack storage compartment. 14. The method of claim 10 , wherein each of the plurality of reagent packs includes one or more wells, the method further comprising; with the receptacle distribution system, transferring one of the plurality of reagent packs from a corresponding one of the reagent pack storage stations in the reagent pack storage carousel to a reagent pack loading station configured to receive one of the plurality of reagent packs and hold the one reagent pack such that the one or more wells of the one reagent pack are accessible by a pipettor, wherein the reagent pack loading station includes spaced apart hold down features for holding the one reagent pack in the reagent pack loading station; and with an automated pipettor dispensing a reconstitution reagent into one or more of the one or more wells of the one of the plurality of reagent packs disposed in the reagent pack loading station. 15. The method of claim 10 , wherein the receptacle distribution system includes a distributor head comprising inner walls and internal rails formed on the inner walls, wherein the internal rails are configured to carry (i) one of the plurality of reagent packs with a bottom edge of the one reagent pack supported on the internal rails and (ii) a multiple receptacle device comprising a plurality of receptacles connected to one another by a connecting rib structure which defines downwardly facing shoulders extending longitudinally along either side of the multiple receptacle device and which are supported on the internal rails with each of the plurality of receptacles disposed between and at least partially below the internal rails, and wherein the method further comprises transferring a multiple receptacle device from a receptacle distributor located outside the receptacle distribution system to the receptacle distribution system with a receptacle handoff device. 16. The method of claim 15 , further comprising: with the receptacle distribution system, transferring a multiple receptacle device from the receptacle handoff device to a magnetic elution slot; within the magnetic elution slot, applying a magnetic force to contents of the multiple receptacle device to pull magnetic beads to side walls of each of the plurality of receptacles; and with a pipettor, aspirating an eluate fluid from one or more of the plurality of receptacles. 17. The method of claim 14 , further comprising: with the receptacle distribution system, transferring a multiple receptacle device from a receptacle handoff device to a magnetic elution slot; within the magnetic elution slot, applying a magnetic force to contents of the multiple receptacle device to pull magnetic beads to side walls of the multiple receptacle device, and with a pipettor, aspirating an eluate fluid from the multiple receptacle device. 18. The method of claim 10 , wherein each of the plurality of reagent packs includes one or more wells, the method further comprisin
