An agricultural row unit for use with a towing frame hitched to a tractor includes an attachment frame adapted to be rigidly connected to the towing frame, a linkage pivotably coupled to the attachment frame, and a row unit frame having a leading end pivotably coupled to the linkage to permit vertical pivoting movement of the row unit frame relative to the attachment frame. A hydraulic cylinder coupled to the attachment frame and the linkage, for urging the row unit frame downwardly toward the soil, includes a movable ram extending into the cylinder, and a hydraulic-fluid cavity within the cylinder for receiving pressurized hydraulic fluid for advancing the ram in a direction that pivots the linkage and the row unit frame downwardly toward the soil. An accumulator positioned adjacent to the hydraulic cylinder has a fluid chamber containing a diaphragm, with the portion of the chamber on one side of the diaphragm being connected to the hydraulic-fluid cavity in the hydraulic cylinder, and the portion of the chamber on the other side of the diaphragm containing a pressurized gas.

The invention claimed is: 1. A downforce control system for a planter row unit, comprising: a downforce actuator associated with the planter row unit to urge the planter row unit downwardly with a controllable force that can be adjusted, said planter row unit producing a downforce on an implement during planting operations, said downforce actuator disposed to change said downforce when actuated; a control module for defining a desired downforce on the implement; a valve in fluid communication with said downforce actuator for adjusting the fluid pressure supplied to said downforce actuator, said valve associated with the planter row unit; and a controller for adjusting the downforce produced by said downforce actuator. 2. The downforce control system of claim 1 , further comprising an energy storage device coupled to a structure of the planter row unit, said structure with the energy storage device moving together in response to upwards or downwards movement of the implement. 3. The downforce control system of claim 2 , wherein the energy storage device is housed within the structure. 4. The downforce control system of claim 3 , wherein the structure is a hydraulic cylinder, which forms at least part of the downforce actuator. 5. The downforce control system of claim 1 , wherein the downforce actuator lacks a spring to impart the controllable force to the planter row unit. 6. The downforce control system of claim 1 , wherein the controller is configured to receive a control signal from a line coupled to the downforce actuator. 7. A planter row unit including the downforce control system of claim 1 . 8. An apparatus coupled to the downforce control system of claim 1 . 9. The apparatus of claim 8 , further comprising a GPS system. 10. The apparatus of claim 8 , wherein the apparatus is a tractor, an agricultural planter, a seeder, a fertilizer applicator, or a tillage equipment. 11. The apparatus of claim 8 , further comprising between 36 to 54 planter row units inclusive of the planter row unit, each of the planter row units comprising the downforce control system of claim 1 . 12. The apparatus of claim 8 , wherein the implement is a furrow-opening device, a gauge wheel, a seeder, a fertilizer applicator, or a tillage device. 13. The downforce control system of claim 1 , wherein the controller is configured to prevent uncontrolled bouncing of the implement over irregular terrain. 14. The downforce control system of claim 1 , wherein the controllable force is adjusted for different soil conditions. 15. The downforce control system of claim 1 , wherein the controller is configured to permit on-the-go adjustments rapidly and to allow the downforce control system to flex and float with changing terrain and soil conditions. 16. The downforce control system of claim 1 , being configured to quickly release all downforce adjustment of the planter row unit to allow the implement to quickly rise.
