Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

An agricultural row unit includes a linkage assembly that is pivotably coupled to an attachment frame. A hydraulic cylinder is coupled to the linkage assembly and applies pressure to the linkage assembly. A controller is mounted in the row unit such that is coupled to the hydraulic cylinder for controlling the pressure applied by the hydraulic cylinder.

The invention claimed is: 1. An agricultural row unit for use with a towing frame hitched to a towing vehicle, the agricultural row unit comprising: an attachment frame adapted to be rigidly connected to the towing frame; a linkage assembly pivotably coupled to the attachment frame; a hydraulic cylinder located on the row unit and coupled to the linkage assembly, the hydraulic cylinder being mounted to apply pressure to the linkage assembly; and a controller coupled to the hydraulic cylinder and located on the row unit for controlling the pressure applied by the hydraulic cylinder. 2. The agricultural row unit of claim 1 , further comprising a control valve coupled to the hydraulic cylinder, the control valve adjusting the pressure in the hydraulic cylinder in response to receiving an output signal from the controller. 3. The agricultural row unit of claim 2 , wherein the controller is physically mounted directly to the control valve. 4. The agricultural row unit of claim 2 , further comprising a manifold to which the control valve and the controller are attached, the manifold being attached to the hydraulic cylinder. 5. The agricultural row unit of claim 1 , wherein the controller includes one or more of a pressure transducer, embedded electronics, and an electronic connector. 6. The agricultural row unit of claim 1 , wherein the controller is coupled to a control wire and a valve wire, the control wire receiving electrical power from a power supply and control commands from a control interface, the valve wire being connected to the control valve. 7. The agricultural row unit of claim 1 , further comprising an opener disk for forming a furrow, the opener disk being attached to a support via a swing arm, the hydraulic cylinder and the controller being mounted to the support. 8. The agricultural row unit of claim 1 , wherein the hydraulic cylinder is configured to apply, alternately, both down pressure and up pressure. 9. The agricultural row unit of claim 1 , wherein the hydraulic cylinder includes a double-acting ram. 10. An agricultural system, comprising: a source for supplying pressurized fluid; a towing frame attachable to a towing vehicle; and a plurality of row units attached to the towing frame and arranged in a side-by-side arrangement, each row unit of the plurality of row units including an attachment frame attached to the towing frame, a linkage assembly pivotably coupled to the attachment frame, a hydraulic cylinder coupled to the linkage assembly and applying pressure to the linkage assembly, and a controller mounted to the respective row unit and coupled to the hydraulic cylinder for controlling the pressure applied by the hydraulic cylinder. 11. The agricultural system of claim 10 , wherein each row unit further comprises a control valve coupled to the hydraulic cylinder, the control valve adjusting the pressure in the hydraulic cylinder in response to receiving an output signal from the controller. 12. The agricultural system of claim 11 , wherein the controller is physically mounted directly to the control valve. 13. The agricultural system of claim 10 , wherein each row unit further comprises a manifold to which the control valve and the controller are attached, the manifold being attached to the hydraulic cylinder. 14. The agricultural system of claim 10 , wherein each row unit further comprises an opener disk for forming a furrow, the opener disk being attached to a support via a swing arm, the hydraulic cylinder and the controller being mounted to the support. 15. The agricultural system of claim 10 , wherein the hydraulic cylinder is configured to apply, alternately, both down pressure and up pressure. 16. The agricultural system of claim 10 , wherein the hydraulic cylinder includes two integrated accumulators. 17. An agricultural system, comprising: a source for supplying pressurized fluid; a towing frame attachable to a towing vehicle; a first row unit attached to the towing frame and including a first attachment frame attached to the towing frame, a first hydraulic cylinder coupled to the first attachment frame and applying pressure to at least a portion of the first row unit, a first control valve coupled to the first hydraulic cylinder for adjusting the pressure, and a first controller coupled to the first control valve for controlling the adjusting of pressure; and a second row unit attached to the towing frame in a side-by-side arrangement with the first row unit, the second row unit including a second attachment frame attached to the towing frame, a second hydraulic cylinder coupled to second attachment frame and applying pressure to at least a portion of the second row unit, a second control valve coupled to the second hydraulic cylinder for adjusting the pressure, and a second controller coupled to the second control valve for controlling the adjusting of the pressure. 18. The agricultural system of claim 17 , wherein the first controller is physically mounted directly to the first control valve and the second controller is physically mounted directly to the second control valve. 19. The agricultural system of claim 17 , wherein the first row unit further comprises a first manifold to which the first control valve and the first controller are attached, the first manifold being attached to the first hydraulic cylinder, the second row unit further comprising a second manifold to which the second control valve and the second controller are attached, the second manifold being attached to the second hydraulic cylinder. 20. The agricultural system of claim 17 , wherein at least one of the first hydraulic cylinder and the second hydraulic cylinder is configured to apply, alternately, both down pressure and up pressure.
