An improved approach to tracking media playback includes tracking logic that is based on abandonment indicators. An abandonment indicator is detected during media playback, such as a user interaction with a computing device that is detected prior to ceasing playback of the media content. Tracking messages are reduced, suppressed, or suspended until an abandonment indicator is detected. After an abandonment indicator is detected, the system quickens, releases, or restart sending tracking messages to a collection system.

What is claimed is: 1. A method comprising: under control of a physical computing device comprising one or more hardware processors: detecting, in a media player of the physical computing device, a playback of media content; activating a listener configured to receive one or more events from the physical computing device; receiving, from the listener, a first event generated by the physical computing device; determining that the first event matches one or more abandonment indicators by comparing the first event to each indicator type of a plurality of abandonment indicator types; enabling a heartbeat tracking mode of the playback of the media content; transmitting, to a server, a first tracking message comprising a first playback position of the media content; determining that a second event matching the one or more abandonment indicators has not been received within a threshold period of elapsed time from receiving the first event; and in response to determining that the second event matching the one or more abandonment indicators has not been received within the threshold period of elapsed time, enabling a tracking suppression mode that suppresses transmitting of tracking messages by the physical computing device. 2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of abandonment indicator types comprises at least two of: movement of the physical computing device, a keystroke, touch input, voice input, button selection, or interaction with an application. 3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising: in response to enabling the heartbeat tracking mode, transmitting, to the server, a plurality of tracking messages, wherein each tracking message of the plurality of tracking messages comprises a playback position of the media content, wherein transmitting the first tracking message is in response to enabling the heartbeat tracking mode. 4. The method of claim 3 , wherein transmitting the plurality of tracking messages comprises: transmitting a second tracking message of the plurality of tracking messages after a time interval has elapsed. 5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the time interval is a predetermined amount of time. 6. The method of claim 4 , further comprising: determining a duration of time of the media content, wherein the duration of time is a remaining amount of time for the playback of the media content; and calculating the time interval from a percentage value and the duration of time. 7. The method of claim 1 , wherein enabling the tracking suppression mode comprises: lowering a rate of transmitting the tracking messages. 8. A system comprising: non-transitory physical computer storage; and a computer hardware processor in a physical computing device, the computer hardware processor being in communication with the non-transitory physical computer storage and configured to: detect a playback of media content; activate a listener configured to receive one or more events from the physical computing device; receive, from the listener, a first event generated by the physical computing device; determine that the first event matches one or more abandonment indicators by comparing the first event to each indicator type of a plurality of abandonment indicator types; enable a heartbeat tracking mode of the playback of the media content; transmit, to a server, a first tracking message comprising a first playback position of the media content; determine that a second event matching the one or more abandonment indicators has not been received within a threshold period of elapsed time from receiving the first event; and in response to determining that the second event matching the one or more abandonment indicators has not been received within the threshold period of elapsed time, enable a tracking suppression mode that suppresses transmitting of second tracking messages by the physical computing device. 9. The system of claim 8 , wherein the computer hardware processor is further configured to: in response to enabling the heartbeat tracking mode, set a rate at which tracking messages are transmitted to a first rate. 10. The system of claim 9 , wherein the computer hardware processor is further configured to: in response to enabling the tracking suppression mode, set the rate at which the tracking messages are transmitted to a second rate. 11. The system of claim 10 , wherein the computer hardware processor is further configured to: detect the second event matching the one or more abandonment indicators; in response to detecting the second event, enable the heartbeat tracking mode of the playback of the media content; and in response to enabling the heartbeat tracking mode, set the rate at which the tracking messages are transmitted to the first rate. 12. The system of claim 8 , wherein the computer hardware processor is further configured to: in response to enabling the heartbeat tracking mode, transmit, to the server, a plurality of tracking messages, wherein each tracking message of the plurality of tracking messages comprises a playback position of the media content, wherein transmitting the first tracking message is in response to enabling the heartbeat tracking mode. 13. A method comprising: under control of a physical computing device comprising one or more hardware processors: detecting, in a media player of the physical computing device, a playback of media content; activating a listener configured to receive one or more events from the physical computing device; receiving, from the listener, a first event generated by the physical computing device; determining that the first event matches one or more abandonment indicators by comparing the first event to each indicator type of a plurality of abandonment indicator types; in response to determining that the first event matches the one or more abandonment indicators, enabling a heartbeat tracking mode of the playback of the media content, wherein the heartbeat tracking mode further comprises regularly transmitting, to a server, a plurality of tracking messages after a time interval has elapsed; transmitting, to a server, a first tracking message of the plurality of tracking messages, the first tracking message comprising a first playback position of the media content; determining that a second event matching the one or more abandonment indicators has not been received within a threshold period of elapsed time from receiving the first event; and in response to determining that the second event matching the one or more abandonment indicators has not been received within the threshold period of elapsed time, enabling a tracking suppression mode that suppresses transmitting of tracking messages by the physical computing device. 14. The method of claim 13 , further comprising: in response to enabling the heartbeat tracking mode, transmitting, to the server, the plurality of tracking messages, wherein each tracking message of the plurality of tracking messages comprises a playback position of the media content, wherein transmitting the first tracking message is in response to enabling the heartbeat tracking mode. 15. The method of claim 14 , wherein transmitting the plurality of tracking messages comprises: transmitting a second tracking message of the plurality of tracking messages after a time interval has elapsed, wherein the time interval is a predetermined amount of time. 16. The method of claim 13 , further comprising: in response to enabling the heartbeat tracking mode, setting a rate at which the tracking messages are transmitted to a first rate.
