Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Certain aspects pertain to methods of fabricating an optical device on a substantially transparent substrate that include a pre-deposition operation that removes a width of lower conductor layer at a distance from the outer edge of the substrate to form a pad at the outer edge. The pad and any deposited layers of the optical device may be removed in a post edge deletion operation.

What is claimed is: 1. An electrochromic device comprising: a first transparent conductor layer disposed on a rectangular area of a rectangular glass substrate, the rectangular area less than that of the rectangular glass substrate, the first transparent conductor layer surrounded by a first perimeter area that is substantially free of the first transparent conductor layer, wherein the first transparent conductor layer has a taper along at least three sides of the rectangular area and a bus bar pad expose area along one side of the rectangular area; one or more material layers comprising at least one electrochromic material, the one or more layers disposed on the first transparent conductor layer; and a second transparent conductor layer disposed on the one or more material layers; wherein the one or more material layers and the second transparent conductor layer are coextensive with, and overhang, the first transparent conductor layer along at least one side; wherein the bus bar pad expose area is substantially free of material down to the first transparent conductor layer; and wherein the electrochromic device is substantially free of (i) the first transparent conductor layer, (ii) the one or more material layers, and (iii) the second transparent conductor layer in a second perimeter area within the first perimeter area. 2. The electrochromic device of claim 1 , wherein the second perimeter area lies along the three sides. 3. The electrochromic device of claim 1 , wherein the taper is a partial removal of thickness from the first transparent conductor layer along the at least three sides. 4. The electrochromic device of claim 1 , wherein the taper along the at least three sides of the first transparent conductor layer is a stepwise taper. 5. The electrochromic device of claim 1 , wherein the taper of the first transparent conductor layer is along at least the one side of the first transparent conductor layer at the bus bar pad expose area. 6. The electrochromic device of claim 5 , wherein the taper of the first transparent conductor layer at the bus bar pad expose area is a stepwise taper. 7. The electrochromic device of claim 1 , wherein the first transparent conductor layer has a portion of its thickness removed in the bus bar pad expose area. 8. The electrochromic device of claim 1 , further comprising a diffusion barrier between the first transparent conductor layer and the rectangular glass substrate. 9. The electrochromic device of claim 8 , wherein the diffusion barrier is disposed on at least the rectangular area of the rectangular glass substrate. 10. The electrochromic device of claim 1 , further comprising a vapor barrier layer coextensive with the second transparent conductor layer. 11. The electrochromic device of claim 1 , further comprising a first bus bar disposed on the first transparent conductor layer within the bus bar pad expose area. 12. The electrochromic device of claim 11 , further comprising a second bus bar on a portion of the second transparent conductor layer that overhangs the first transparent conductor layer along the three sides. 13. The electrochromic device of claim 1 , wherein the first transparent conductor layer, the second transparent conductor layer, and the one or more material layers are solid-state and inorganic. 14. The electrochromic device of claim 1 , wherein the rectangular glass substrate is float glass, tempered or untempered. 15. The electrochromic device of claim 1 , wherein the first transparent conductor layer comprises fluorinated tin oxide. 16. The electrochromic device of claim 1 , wherein the rectangular glass substrate is registered with another rectangular glass substrate in an insulated glass unit.
