The invention claimed is: 1. A method for treating an S1P 5 -mediated disease in a subject in need thereof, comprising administering an effective amount of 1-[[(3S)-3-methyl-6-(4,4,4-trifluorobutoxy)-3,4-dihydronaphthalen-2-yl]methyl]azetidine-3-carboxylic acid or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof to the subject. 2. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the S1P 5 -mediated disease is a neurodegenerative disease, an autoimmune disease, an infectious disease, or cancer. 3. The method according to claim 2 , wherein the S1P 5 -mediated disease is a neurodegenerative disease selected from the group consisting of schizophrenia, Binswanger's disease, multiple sclerosis, neuromyelitis optica, Alzheimer-type dementia, cognitive impairment, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, spinocerebellar degeneration, multiple system atrophy, Parkinson's disease, and Lewy body dementia. 4. A method for treating an S1P 5 -mediated disease in a subject in need thereof, comprising administering an effective amount of a compound of the following structure: to the subject. 5. The method according to claim 4 , wherein the S1P 5 -mediated disease is a neurodegenerative disease, an autoimmune disease, an infectious disease, or cancer. 6. The method according to claim 5 , wherein the S1P 5 -mediated disease is a neurodegenerative disease selected from the group consisting of schizophrenia, Binswanger's disease, multiple sclerosis, neuromyelitis optica, Alzheimer-type dementia, cognitive impairment, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, spinocerebellar degeneration, multiple system atrophy, Parkinson's disease, and Lewy body dementia. 7. A method for treating an S1P 5 -mediated disease in a subject in need thereof, comprising administering an effective amount of a pharmaceutically acceptable salt of the compound of the following structure: to the subject. 8. The method according to claim 7 , wherein the S1P5-mediated disease is a neurodegenerative disease, an autoimmune disease, an infectious disease, or cancer. 9. The method according to claim 8 , wherein the S1P5-mediated disease is a neurodegenerative disease selected from the group consisting of schizophrenia, Binswanger's disease, multiple sclerosis, neuromyelitis optica, Alzheimer-type dementia, cognitive impairment, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, spinocerebellar degeneration, multiple system atrophy, Parkinson's disease, and Lewy body dementia.
