Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A method includes injection molding a preform using a two phase injection system having a first phase in which a material is injected into the preform and a second phase in which the material is injected into the preform. The preform is disposed in a mold. The preform is blow molded into an intermediate article. The intermediate article is trimmed to form a finished container. The first phase includes injecting a material into the preform to form a single layer of the preform and the second phase includes injecting the material to form inner and outer layers and an intermediate layer between the inner and outer layers. The inner and outer layers include the material and the intermediate layer includes at least one additive. Finished containers are disclosed.

First claim

Opening claim text (preview).

What is claimed is: 1. A container comprising: a top section comprising a first wall having only one layer; and a bottom section including a second wall comprising an outer layer, an intermediate layer and an inner layer, the bottom section being connected with the top section such that the outer layer of the bottom section is continuous with an outer surface of the first wall and the inner layer of the bottom section is continuous with an opposite inner surface of the first wall, wherein the only one layer of the top section, the outer layer of the bottom section and the inner layer of the bottom section are made from a first material, and wherein the intermediate layer of the bottom section comprises an additive. 2. The container recited in claim 1 , wherein the container is a blow molded container. 3. The container recited in claim 1 , wherein the container is a finished blow molded container. 4. The container recited in claim 1 , wherein the intermediate layer of the bottom section consists of the additive. 5. The container recited in claim 4 , wherein the additive is selected from the group consisting of passive oxygen scavengers, active oxygen scavengers, colorants, calcium carbonate fillers and foaming agents. 6. The container recited in claim 1 , wherein the first material is polyethylene terephythalate and the intermediate layer of the bottom section consists of polyethylene terephythalate and the additive. 7. The container recited in claim 6 , wherein the additive is selected from the group consisting of passive oxygen scavengers, active oxygen scavengers, colorants, calcium carbonate fillers and foaming agents. 8. The container recited in claim 1 , wherein the first material is polyethylene terephythalate. 9. The container recited in claim 8 , wherein the intermediate layer of the bottom section consists of the additive. 10. The container recited in claim 9 , wherein the additive is selected from the group consisting of passive oxygen scavengers, active oxygen scavengers, colorants, calcium carbonate fillers and foaming agents. 11. The container recited in claim 8 , wherein the first material is polyethylene terephythalate and the intermediate layer of the bottom section consists of polyethylene terephythalate and the additive. 12. The container recited in claim 11 , wherein the additive is selected from the group consisting of passive oxygen scavengers, active oxygen scavengers, colorants, calcium carbonate fillers and foaming agents. 13. The container recited in claim 1 , wherein the only one layer of the top section is free of the additive. 14. The container recited in claim 13 , wherein the intermediate layer of the bottom section consists of the additive. 15. The container recited in claim 14 , wherein the additive is selected from the group consisting of passive oxygen scavengers, active oxygen scavengers, colorants, calcium carbonate fillers and foaming agents. 16. The container recited in claim 13 , wherein the first material is polyethylene terephythalate and the intermediate layer of the bottom section consists of polyethylene terephythalate and the additive. 17. The container recited in claim 16 , wherein the additive is selected from the group consisting of passive oxygen scavengers, active oxygen scavengers, colorants, calcium carbonate fillers and foaming agents. 18. The finished container recited in claim 1 , wherein the only one layer of the top section, the outer layer of the bottom section and the inner layer of the bottom section are free of the additive. 19. A container comprising: a top section comprising a first wall having only one layer; and a bottom section a second wall comprising an outer layer, an intermediate layer and an inner layer, the bottom section being connected with the top section such that the outer layer of the bottom section is continuous with an outer surface of the first wall and the inner layer of the bottom section is continuous with an opposite inner surface of the first wall, wherein the only one layer of the top section, the outer layer of the bottom section and the inner layer of the bottom section are made from a first material, wherein the intermediate layer of the bottom section consists of additive, wherein the additive is an oxygen scavenger. 20. A container comprising: a top section comprising a first wall having only one layer; and a bottom section a second wall comprising an outer layer, an intermediate layer and an inner layer, the bottom section being connected with the top section such that the outer layer of the bottom section is continuous with an outer surface of the first wall and the inner layer of the bottom section is continuous with an opposite inner surface of the first wall, wherein the only one layer of the top section, the outer layer of the bottom section and the inner layer of the bottom section are made from polyethylene terephythalate, wherein the intermediate layer of the bottom section consists of additive, wherein the only one layer of the top section, the outer layer of the bottom section and the inner layer of the bottom section are free of the additive, and wherein the additive is an oxygen scavenger.
