Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Integrated multiple actuator electro-hydraulic systems as well as their methods of use are described. Depending on the particular application, the integrated electro-hydraulic systems may exhibit different frequency responses and/or may be integrated into a single combined unit.

What is claimed is: 1. An integrated motion control unit, comprising: a first actuator that includes a housing with an internal volume separated into a compression volume and an extension volume by a double-acting piston and a piston rod attached to the double-acting piston; a reversible hydraulic pump that has a first port that is in continuous fluid communication with the extension volume, and a second port that is in continuous fluid communication with the compression volume; a first pressurized accumulator in fluid communication with the compression volume or the extension volume; and a second actuator with a single-acting annular piston that extends radially and surrounds the housing of the first actuator along at least a portion of the axial length of the housing of the first actuator, wherein a volume of hydraulic fluid within the second actuator is separate from the internal volume of the first actuator. 2. The integrated motion control unit of claim 1 , wherein the first actuator and the second actuator are positioned operatively in parallel to each other, and interposed between a first structure and a second structure. 3. The integrated motion control unit of claim 2 , wherein the first structure is a body of a vehicle and the second structure is a wheel assembly of the vehicle. 4. The integrated motion control unit of claim 1 , further comprising a spring element that is operatively in parallel with the first actuator and operatively in series with the second actuator. 5. The integrated motion control unit of claim 4 , wherein the spring element is at least one of a coil suspension spring and an air spring. 6. The integrated motion control unit of claim 1 , wherein the first actuator has a bandwidth extending to an upper limit of at least 12 Hz. 7. The integrated motion control unit of claim 1 , further comprising a vehicle top mount that is operatively in series with the first actuator and operatively in parallel with the second actuator. 8. The integrated motion control unit of claim 1 , wherein the hydraulic pump is a hydraulic motor-pump. 9. An active motion control unit, comprising: a first actuator with an internal volume and a first piston that is slidably received in the internal volume and travels along a first axis, wherein the first actuator is interposed between a first structure and a second structure; a second actuator with an internal volume containing hydraulic fluid and a second piston with a second axis of travel, wherein a pressure of the hydraulic fluid induces a force on the second piston along the second axis of travel, wherein the second actuator is operatively connected to a spring element to form an assembly, wherein the assembly is operatively interposed between the first structure and the second structure; a pressurized accumulator; a hydraulic pump with a first port and a second port, wherein at least the first port is in fluid communication with the internal volume of the first actuator and the internal volume of the second actuator, and wherein the second port is in fluid communication with the pressurized accumulator; and a low pass hydraulic filter that regulates fluid flow between the first port and the internal volume in the second actuator, wherein a response frequency of the second actuator is determined, at least in part, by the low pass filter. 10. The active motion control unit of claim 9 , wherein the first actuator has a faster response than the second actuator. 11. The active motion control unit of claim 9 , wherein the first and second axes are operatively in parallel to each other. 12. The active motion control unit of claim 9 , wherein the first structure is a vehicle body of a vehicle and the second structure is a wheel assembly of the vehicle. 13. The active motion control unit of claim 9 , wherein the first actuator has a maximum response frequency bandwidth extending to an upper limit of at least 10 Hz and the second actuator has a bandwidth extending to an upper limit of no more than or equal to 5 Hz. 14. The active motion control unit of claim 13 , wherein the first actuator has a bandwidth extending to an upper limit of at least 20 Hz and the second actuator has a bandwidth extending to an upper limit of no more than 3 Hz. 15. The active motion control unit of claim 9 , wherein the first structure is a vehicle top mount that is operatively in series with the first actuator and operatively in parallel with the second actuator. 16. The active motion control unit of claim 9 , wherein the spring element is selected from the group consisting of a coil suspension spring and an air spring. 17. The active motion control unit of claim 9 , wherein the second piston of the second actuator extends radially around a housing of the first actuator. 18. The active motion control unit of claim 9 , further comprising a spring perch that supports the spring element and is supported by the second actuator. 19. The active motion control unit of claim 9 , wherein the hydraulic pump is a hydraulic motor-pump. 20. The active motion control unit of claim 9 , wherein the hydraulic pump is a bidirectional hydraulic pump.
