Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Antimicrobial compositions including at least one acid and at least one anionic surfactant are provided. In particular, food contact antimicrobial compositions including at least one acid and at least one anionic surfactant provide efficacious virucidal activity, including against Norovirus, having acceptable use solution pH that do not require use of personal protective equipment (PPE), are surface compatible and do not leave residues on treated surfaces. Methods of cleaning a surface with the compositions are also provided and may beneficially eliminate the need to rinse the antimicrobial compositions after use.

What is claimed is: 1. A solid antimicrobial composition consisting of: from about 50 wt-% to about 75 wt-% of a strong acid, wherein the strong acid is methane sulfonic acid, phosphoric acid, sulfuric acid, sodium bisulfate, or a combination thereof, based on total weight of the composition; from about 8 wt-% to about 55 wt-% of a weak acid, wherein the weak acid is lactic acid, citric acid, maleic acid, or a combination thereof, based on total weight of the composition; an anionic surfactant, wherein the anionic surfactant isa sulfonate, sulfate and/or carboxylate; a nonionic surfactant and/or at least one solidifying agent, wherein the at least one nonionic surfactant is an alkoxylated surfactant having an ethylene oxide-propylene oxide (EO/PO) block copolymer; and wherein the at least one solidifying agent is polyethylene glycol, an alkali metal salt, or an alkaline earth metal salt; and from about 0.1 wt-% to about 25 wt-% of water. 2. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the at least one anionic surfactant is a C 8 -C 22 alkyl sulfonate and/or alpha sulfonated carboxylic acid or its ester. 3. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the at least one anionic surfactant is linear alkyl benzene sulfonic acid. 4. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the composition forms a use solution when diluted with water and wherein the use solution has a use pH of from about 1.5 to about 4. 5. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the at least one anionic surfactant comprises from about 0.1 wt-% to about 38 wt-% of the solid composition.
