Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A system and method processes blood donation data for presentation on an operator interface. A handheld computing device has a touch screen display and a processing circuit to provide an icon associated with an executable application on a first display screen, the icon configured to be positioned along with icons for other executable applications on the first display screen. The processing circuit is to retrieve an indication of a need for a particular blood component, wherein the particular blood component is selected from the group comprising whole blood, double red cells and plasma. The processing circuit is to provide the indication of the need for a particular blood component to the display. The processing circuit is to provide to the touch screen display a remaining time or a date the blood donor is next eligible to donate a blood component based on a donation eligibility guideline.

The invention claimed is: 1. A system for notifying a blood product donor of donor eligibility and administering a donor questionnaire, comprising: a handheld computing device comprising a handheld housing, a touch screen display coupled to the housing, a memory to store an executable application, a network interface circuit configured to communicate wirelessly, and a processing circuit coupled to the display, the network interface circuit and the memory, the processing circuit configured to: provide an icon associated with the executable application on a first display screen, the icon configured to be positioned along with icons for other executable applications on the first display screen; receive an indication from the touch screen display that a user has selected the icon to operate the executable application; a remote server computer in wireless communication with the handheld computing device, the remote server computer in communication with: a first computer configured to process data at a first fixed site blood product donation center having blood product donation instruments; and a second computer configured to process data at a second fixed site blood product donation center which is different than the first fixed site blood product donation center; the remote server computer configured to interact with the first and second computers at the different fixed site blood product donation centers; the remote server comprising a data management system developed by a provider of the blood product donation instruments; further comprising the blood product donation instruments, wherein one of the blood product donation instruments collects the blood product from the donor into a blood component container; wherein the handheld computing device is configured to: receive a donor identifier at a display screen; notify the blood product donor via the touch screen display of eligibility of the blood product donor to donate based on a donation eligibility guideline; display a name and street address for a default blood product donation center for the blood product donor; administer a donor questionnaire to screen the donor; and display a confirmation screen for the donation. 2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the handheld computing device is configured to send results from the donor questionnaire to the remote server computer. 3. The system of claim 2 , wherein the donation eligibility guideline is based on an amount of plasma donated. 4. The system of claim 3 , wherein the remote server comprises a registration website developed by the provider. 5. The system of claim 4 , wherein the remote server comprises a database of donor history. 6. The system of claim 5 , wherein the default blood product donation center is a plasma donation center, wherein the blood product donation instruments are plasma collection instruments. 7. The system of claim 6 , wherein the handheld computing device is further configured to provide an announcement from an administrator to the blood product donor. 8. The system of claim 7 , wherein the handheld computing device is further configured to display the provider's corporate name on a display screen. 9. The system of claim 1 , wherein the donor questionnaire is administered to determine if the donor qualifies for a blood donation. 10. The system of claim 1 , wherein the remote server computer is configured to push requests from the blood product donation centers to the handheld computing device. 11. The system of claim 10 , wherein the requests comprise a reminder to donate. 12. The system of claim 1 , wherein the remote server computer is configured to calculate an incentive to be received based on a number of donations for a particular donor, wherein the remote server computer is configured to transmit an indication of the incentive to the handheld computing device. 13. A handheld computing device comprising: a handheld housing; a touch screen display coupled to the housing; a memory to store an executable application; a network interface circuit configured to communicate wirelessly; and a processing circuit coupled to the display, the network interface circuit and the memory, wherein the processing circuit is further configured to: provide an icon associated with the executable application on a first display screen, the icon configured to be positioned along with icons for other executable applications on the first display screen; receive an indication from the touch screen display that a user has selected the icon to operate the executable application; communicate with a remote server computer over the network interface circuit, the remote server computer in communication with a plasma donation center having plasma product collection instruments, the remote server computer operating a data management system developed by a provider of the plasma product collection instruments; receive a plasma donor identifier at a display screen; notify a plasma donor via the touch screen display of eligibility of the plasma donor to donate based on a donation eligibility guideline; display a name and street address for the plasma donation center; administer a donor questionnaire to screen the plasma donor; send results from the donor questionnaire to the remote server computer; display a confirmation screen for a plasma donation for the plasma donor at the plasma donation center; provide an announcement from an administrator to the plasma donor; and receive a request from the plasma donation center at the handheld computing device, the request comprising a reminder to donate, wherein one of the plasma product collection instruments collects the plasma product from the plasma donor into a plasma product container. 14. The handheld computing device of claim 13 , further comprising the remote server computer, wherein the remote server computer comprises a registration website developed by the provider, wherein the handheld computing device is further configured to display the provider's corporate name on a second display screen. 15. The handheld computing device of claim 14 , wherein the remote server computer is configured to calculate an incentive to be received based on a number of plasma donations for the plasma donor, wherein the remote server computer is configured to transmit an indication of the incentive to the handheld computing device. 16. The handheld computing device of claim 13 , further comprising a location circuit to identify a location of the device, to transmit the location to the remote server computer, the remote server computer to retrieve records for first and second fixed site plasma donation centers and a mobile plasma collection site selected based on the location, the handheld computing device to receive from the remote server a listing of a plurality of plasma donation sites for selection by a user, the listing of a plurality of plasma donation sites comprising at least one fixed site plasma donation center and at least one mobile plasma collection site.
