A system and method processes blood donation data for presentation on an operator interface. A handheld computing device has a touch screen display and a processing circuit to provide an icon associated with an executable application on a first display screen, the icon configured to be positioned along with icons for other executable applications on the first display screen. The processing circuit is to retrieve an indication of a need for a particular blood component, wherein the particular blood component is selected from the group comprising whole blood, double red cells and plasma. The processing circuit is to provide the indication of the need for a particular blood component to the display. The processing circuit is to provide to the touch screen display a remaining time or a date the blood donor is next eligible to donate a blood component based on a donation eligibility guideline.

The invention claimed is: 1. A handheld computing device programmed for recruitment of a blood donor, comprising: a handheld housing; a touch screen display coupled to the housing; a memory to store an executable application; a network interface circuit configured to communicate wirelessly with a remote server computer; and a processing circuit coupled to the display, the network interface circuit and the memory, the processing circuit configured to: provide an icon associated with the executable application on a first display screen, the icon configured to be positioned along with icons for other executable applications on the first display screen; receive an indication from the touch screen display that a user has selected the icon to operate the executable application; identify a local donation facility based on a location of the handheld device; retrieve over the network interface circuit an indication of a need for a particular blood component at the local donation facility, wherein the particular blood component is selected from the group comprising whole blood, double red cells and plasma; retrieve over the network interface circuit a donor's eligibility to donate a blood component, wherein the need is compared to a donor's eligibility to donate; provide the indication of the need for a particular blood component to the touch screen display based at least in part on the comparison; and provide to the touch screen display a remaining time or a date the blood donor is next eligible to donate a blood component based on the donor's eligibility to donate. 2. The handheld computing device of claim 1 , wherein the processing circuit is configured to indicate on the display how long a collection of a blood component will take. 3. The handheld computing device of claim 2 , wherein the processing circuit is configured to list on the display blood component donation types comprising whole blood, double red blood cells and plasma. 4. The handheld computing device of claim 3 , wherein the processing circuit is configured to provide personal data for the blood donor to the display, the personal data comprising blood pressure, pulse and blood type. 5. The handheld computing device of claim 4 , wherein the processing circuit is configured to receive from the touch screen display a request to schedule an appointment at a certain blood donation facility, wherein the processing circuit is configured to retrieve over the network interface circuit a list of available donation times for the certain blood donation facility. 6. The handheld computing device of claim 5 , wherein the processing circuit is configured to: provide a list of blood drives to the display, each blood drive having a location; receive a selection via the display of one of the blood drives; and provide an electronic map showing the location of the selected blood drive. 7. The handheld computing device of claim 6 , wherein the processing circuit is configured to provide a confirmation screen on a different screen than a screen receiving the request to schedule the appointment at a certain blood collection facility, wherein the confirmation screen summarizes the scheduled donation. 8. A tangible computer readable medium storing instructions for operating a handheld computing device application for recruitment of a blood donor, the instructions for execution by a processing circuit of the handheld computing device to provide functions comprising: providing display data to a touch screen display of the handheld computing device; receiving user inputs from the touch screen display of the handheld computing device; communicating wirelessly between the handheld computing device and a server computer; providing an icon associated with the handheld computing device application on a first display screen, the icon configured to be positioned along with icons for other executable applications on the first display screen; receiving an indication from the touch screen display that a user has selected the icon to operate the executable application; identifying a local donation facility based on a location of the handheld device; retrieving over the network interface circuit an indication of a need for a particular blood component at the local donation facility, wherein the particular blood component is selected from the group comprising whole blood, double red cells and plasma; retrieving over the network interface circuit a donor's eligibility to donate a blood component, wherein the need is compared to a donor's eligibility to donate; providing the indication of the need for a particular blood component to the touch screen display; providing to the touch screen display a remaining time or a date the blood donor is next eligible to donate a blood component based on the donor's eligibility to donate; and receiving from the touch screen display a user selection of the particular blood component. 9. The tangible computer readable medium of claim 8 , wherein the processing circuit is configured to indicate on the display how long a collection of a blood component will take. 10. The tangible computer readable medium of claim 8 , wherein the processing circuit is configured to list on the display blood component donation types comprising whole blood, double red blood cells and plasma. 11. The tangible computer readable medium of claim 8 , wherein the processing circuit is configured to provide personal data for the blood donor to the display, the personal data comprising blood pressure, pulse and blood type. 12. The tangible computer readable medium of claim 8 , wherein the processing circuit is configured to receive from the touch screen display a request to schedule an appointment at a certain blood donation facility, wherein the processing circuit is configured to retrieve over the network interface circuit a list of available donation times for the certain blood donation facility. 13. The tangible computer readable medium of claim 12 , wherein the processing circuit is configured to provide a confirmation screen on a different screen than a screen receiving the request to schedule the appointment at a certain blood collection facility, wherein the confirmation screen summarizes the scheduled donation. 14. The tangible computer readable medium of claim 8 , wherein the processing circuit is configured to: provide a list of blood drives to the display, each blood drive having a location; receive a selection via the display of one of the blood drives; and provide an electronic map showing the location of the selected blood drive. 15. A blood donor recruitment system comprising: a handheld computing device configured to download and execute a donor recruitment application, the donor recruitment application launched from a screen having a plurality of icons for different applications executable on the handheld computing device, the application to display on a first screen personal data about a blood donor, to display on a second screen a need for a particular blood component at a certain blood collection facility in the vicinity of the handheld computing device, wherein the certain donation facility is identified based on a location of the handheld computing device, wherein the donor's eligibility to donate a blood component is retrieved over the network interface circuit, wherein the need is compared to a donor's eligibility to donate, wherein the need for a particular blood component is displayed based at least in part on the comparison, and to display on a third screen a plurality of available times available at the certain blood collection facilit
