Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

In some examples, a payment system generates, for a first user, a proxy identifier having a syntax including a symbol and a string of one or more characters that are concatenated such that the symbol appears immediately before the string. The proxy identifier is associated with a financial account of the first user. The payment system receives an indication of an intent to transfer funds from a second user to the first user. The indication includes the proxy identifier in lieu of financial account information of the first user, and to identify the financial account of the first user for receiving the funds. Based at least on identifying the proxy identifier, the payment system accesses the financial account information of the first user and initiates the transfer of funds from the financial account of the second user to the financial account of the first user.

What is claimed: 1. A method comprising: generating, by a payment service system, a proxy identifier for association with a financial account of a first user, wherein the proxy identifier is individually distinguishable from other proxy identifiers associated with financial accounts of other users, the proxy identifier having a syntax including a symbol and a string of one or more characters, wherein the symbol and the string are concatenated such that the symbol appears immediately before the string; associating, by the payment service system and in a data structure accessible by the payment service system, the proxy identifier with the financial account of the first user, wherein the financial account is associated with financial account information; detecting, by the payment service system, in an electronic message between the first user and a second user, the proxy identifier having the syntax, the proxy identifier included in the electronic message in lieu of the financial account information of the financial account of the first user and to identify the financial account of the first user for receiving the funds; based at least in part on detecting, in the electronic message, the proxy identifier associated with the financial account of the first user, determining an indication of an intent to transfer funds from the second user to the first user; based at least on the determining the indication of the intent to transfer funds from the second user to the first user, accessing, by the payment service system and using the detected proxy identifier, the financial account information associated with the financial account of the first user; and based at least in part on accessing the financial account information associated with the financial account of the first user, initiating, by the payment service system, the transfer of funds from a financial account of the second user to the financial account of the first user. 2. The method as recited in claim 1 , wherein the one or more characters in the string comprise a letter and at least one of: one or more additional letters, or one or more numbers. 3. The method as recited in claim 1 , wherein the symbol is at least one of: a non-alphanumeric symbol; or a currency indicator that corresponds to a particular currency of a plurality of currencies. 4. The method as recited in claim 1 , wherein the electronic message between the first user and the second user comprises at least one of: a message communicated via a payment application associated with the payment service system; a message communicated via a messaging application; an email message; or a post to a website. 5. The method as recited in claim 1 , wherein the proxy identifier is generated based at least in part in response to receiving, from a computing device associated with the first user, a request to generate the proxy identifier. 6. The method as recited in claim 1 , further comprising parsing, by the payment service system, the electronic message to detect the proxy identifier associated with the financial account of the first user from text of the electronic message. 7. The method as recited in claim 1 , further comprising: identifying, in the electronic message, a proxy identifier of the second user based at least on the proxy identifier of the second user having the syntax; and identifying the financial account of the second user based at least on the proxy identifier of the second user identified in the electronic message. 8. A payment service system comprising: one or more processors configured by executable instructions to perform operations comprising: generating a proxy identifier for association with a financial account of a first user, wherein the proxy identifier is individually distinguishable from other proxy identifiers associated with financial accounts of other users, the proxy identifier having a syntax including a symbol and a string of one or more characters, wherein the symbol and the string are concatenated such that the symbol appears immediately before the string; associating, in a data structure accessible by the payment service system, the proxy identifier with the financial account of the first user, wherein the financial account is associated with financial account information; detecting, in an electronic message between the first user and a second user, the proxy identifier having the syntax, the proxy identifier included in the electronic message in lieu of the financial account information of the financial account of the first user and to identify the financial account of the first user for receiving the funds; based at least in part on detecting, in the electronic message, the proxy identifier associated with the financial account of the first user, determining an indication of an intent to transfer funds from the second user to the first user; based at least on the determining the indication of the intent to transfer funds from the second user to the first user, accessing, using the detected proxy identifier, the financial account information associated with the financial account of the first user; and based at least in part on accessing the financial account information associated with the financial account of the first user, initiating, by the payment service system, the transfer of funds from a financial account of the second user to the financial account of the first user. 9. The payment service system as recited in claim 8 , wherein the one or more characters in the string comprise a letter and at least one of: one or more additional letters, or one or more numbers. 10. The payment service system as recited in claim 8 , wherein the symbol is at least one of: a non-alphanumeric symbol; or a currency indicator that corresponds to a particular currency of a plurality of currencies. 11. The payment service system as recited in claim 8 , wherein the electronic message between the first user and the second user comprises at least one of: a message communicated via a payment application associated with the payment service system; a message communicated via a messaging application; an email message; or a post to a website. 12. The payment service system as recited in claim 8 , wherein the proxy identifier is generated based at least in part in response to receiving, from a computing device associated with the first user, a request to generate the proxy identifier. 13. The payment service system as recited in claim 8 , the operations further comprising parsing, by the payment service system, the electronic message to detect the proxy identifier associated with the financial account of the first user from text of the electronic message. 14. The payment service system as recited in claim 8 , the operations further comprising: identifying, in the electronic message, a proxy identifier of the second user based at least on the proxy identifier of the second user having the syntax; and identifying the financial account of the second user based at least on the proxy identifier of the second user identified in the electronic message. 15. A non-transitory computer-readable medium storing instructions executable by one or more processors of a payment service system to configure the one or more processors to perform operations comprising: generating a proxy identifier for association with a financial account of a first user, wherein the proxy identifier is individually distinguishable from other proxy identifiers associated with financial accounts of other users, the proxy identifier having a syntax including a symbol and a string of one or more c
