Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A fluid injection system and a fluid verification system for confirming that a syringe, containing a fluid for injection, is fully filled with fluid and neither has free space (i.e., air) near the distal end thereof when the syringe is provided in an upright position nor contains air bubbles. Imaging processing techniques and systems are also provided to determine various injection parameters and to verify the type and certain properties of fluid that is present within a syringe.

The invention claimed is: 1. A fluid injection system comprising: a fluid injector; a fluid path set comprising tubing having a connector with an end; a purge container connected to the end of the connector during a purging procedure prior to an injection procedure, the purge container configured to collect the discharge of contrast media from the end of the connector when the fluid path set is purged and primed and provide an indication that the purge is acceptable based on an amount of contrast media contained therein, the purge container comprising a container body defining an interior volume and at least one feature provided on the container body, the at least one feature having a different appearance when viewed through different types of fluid contained within the container body; an image capture device positioned to capture an image of the at least one feature through a content of the container body; and at least one computing device in communication with the fluid injector and the image capture device, the at least one computing device comprising at least one processor configured to: obtain the image of the at least one feature through the fluid contained within the container body of the purge container; determine, based on the image of the at least one feature, an appearance of the at least one feature; compare the determined appearance with a template of an appearance of the at least one feature when viewed through a fluid provided for a fluid injection procedure; determine that the fluid path set has been purged and primed if the determined appearance matches the template; and automatically display on a display device in communication with the at least one processor an indication that the fluid path set has been purged and primed and the fluid injector is ready for the fluid injection procedure based on the determination. 2. The fluid injection system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one feature is formed on the container body of the purge container by at least one of printing, overmolding, and etching. 3. The fluid injection system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one feature is a fluid dot, a line, a series of lines, or any combination thereof. 4. The fluid injection system of claim 1 , wherein the appearance of the at least one feature comprises at least one of a shape of the at least one feature and an orientation of the at least one feature. 5. A fluid injection system comprising: a fluid injector; a fluid path set comprising tubing having a connector with an end; a purge container connected to the end of the connector during a purging procedure prior to an injection procedure, the purge container configured to collect the discharge of contrast media from the end of the connector when the fluid path set is purged and primed and provide an indication that the purge is acceptable based on an amount of contrast media contained therein, the purge container comprising a container body defining an interior volume and at least one feature provided on the container body; an image capture device positioned to capture an image of the at least one feature through a content of the container body; and at least one computing device in communication with the fluid injector and the image capture device, the at least one computing device comprising at least one processor configured to: obtain the image of the at least one feature through the fluid contained within the container body of the purge container; determine a distance from a top edge of the fluid contained within the container body to the at least one feature; compare the distance from the top edge of the fluid contained within the container to the at least one feature to at least one predetermined distance; and based on the comparison of the distance from the top edge of the fluid contained within the container to the at least one feature to the at least one predetermined distance, display on a display device in communication with the at least one processor an indication that the fluid path set has been purged and primed and the fluid injector is ready for the fluid injection procedure. 6. The fluid injection system of claim 5 , wherein the top edge of the fluid contained within the container and the at least one feature are determined by determining a change in contrast between neighboring pixels in the image of the at least one feature. 7. The fluid injection system of claim 5 , wherein the at least one feature is formed on the container body of the purge container by at least one of printing, overmolding, and etching. 8. The fluid injection system of claim 5 , wherein the at least one feature is a fluid dot, a line, a series of lines, or any combination thereof. 9. A fluid injection system comprising: a fluid injector; a syringe operatively engaged with the fluid injector, the syringe comprising a barrel having a proximal end and a distal end extending to a nozzle; an image capture device positioned to capture an image of at least the nozzle of the syringe; and at least one computing device in communication with the fluid injector and the image capture device, the at least one computing device comprising at least one processor configured to: obtain the image of at least the nozzle of the syringe; compare the image of at least the nozzle of the syringe with templates of the nozzle of the syringe having at least one accessory connected thereto; determine a presence or absence of the at least one accessory based on the comparison; and automatically display on a display device in communication with the at least one processor an indication of the presence or absence of the at least one accessory. 10. The fluid injection system of claim 9 , wherein the at least one accessory is a fluid path set. 11. The fluid injection system of claim 10 , wherein the at least one processor is further configured to disable the fluid injector from conducting an injection procedure if the comparison determines that the fluid path set is absent. 12. The fluid injection system of claim 9 , wherein the at least one accessory is a spike of a fluid transfer device. 13. The fluid injection system of claim 12 , wherein the at least one processor is further configured to disable the fluid injector from conducting an injection procedure if the comparison determines that the spike is present. 14. A fluid injection system comprising: a fluid injector; a syringe operatively engaged with the fluid injector, the syringe comprising a barrel having an indicator configured to provide an indication of a temperature of contents of the syringe positioned thereon; an image capture device positioned to capture an image of at least the indicator; and at least one computing device in communication with the fluid injector and the image capture device, the at least one computing device comprising at least one processor configured to: obtain the image of at least the indicator; determine a color of the indicator based on the image of at least the indicator; determine the temperature of the contents of the syringe based on the color of the indicator; and provide the temperature of the contents of the syringe to the fluid injector. 15.
