Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A system and method for collecting plasma includes drawing whole blood from a donor, combining anticoagulant with the whole blood from the donor, separating the whole blood into a plasma product and a second blood component and sending the plasma product to a collection container. A controller receives parameters over a network from a remote computer, receives a user input to confirm the a parameter and/or procedure, determines a target volume for plasma product and/or raw plasma based on the parameters and, in response to confirming the donor, controls the system to collect the plasma using draw and return phases.

What is claimed is: 1. A method of collecting plasma from a donor, comprising: receiving parameters over a network from a remote computer at a controller local to a plasma collection device, the plasma collection device having a touch screen user input device; receiving a user input at the touch screen to confirm the donor based at least in part on at least one of the parameters; determining a target volume for plasma product and/or raw plasma based at least in part on at least one of the parameters; and in response to confirming the donor, controlling the plasma collection device to draw whole blood from the donor, combine anticoagulant with the whole blood, separate the whole blood into a plasma product and a second blood component comprising red blood cells, send the plasma product to a plasma product collection container, and return the second blood component to the donor. 2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the target volume for plasma product and/or raw plasma is calculated at the remote computer, wherein determining the target volume for plasma product and/or raw plasma comprises receiving the target volume for plasma product and/or raw plasma from the remote computer at the controller. 3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the received parameters comprise a plurality of parameters for a plasma collection procedure, wherein, in response to confirming the donor, the plasma collection device is controlled to perform the plasma collection procedure according to the plurality of parameters. 4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the remote computer comprises a donor management system by which a donor is screened prior to a donation. 5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the method comprises operating at least three draw and return phases to withdraw whole blood from a donor and separate the whole blood into the plasma product and the second blood component and to return the second blood component to the donor. 6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the parameters comprise an image of the donor, further comprising displaying the image on the touchscreen and receiving the user input from the touch screen to confirm the donor. 7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the parameters comprise a donor identifier, further comprising scanning a code from a wristband worn by the donor to confirm the donor. 8. The method of claim 1 , wherein determining a target volume for plasma product and/or raw plasma further comprising using donor weight and height to calculate total blood volume of the donor, using hematocrit to calculate total plasma volume of the donor and calculating target raw plasma based on a percentage of the total plasma volume. 9. A method of collecting plasma from a donor using a plasma collection device, a remote computer disposed remotely from the plasma collection device, and a handheld computer, comprising: determining a target volume for plasma product and/or raw plasma based at least in part on donor data comprising at least a weight of the donor; receiving parameters over a network from the remote computer at a controller local to the plasma collection device; receiving a donor identifier from the remote computer at the handheld computer; displaying the donor identifier on a touchscreen display of the handheld computer; receiving a user input at the touch screen to confirm the donor; and in response to confirming the donor, controlling the plasma collection device to draw whole blood from the donor, combine anticoagulant with the whole blood, separate the whole blood into a plasma product and a second blood component comprising red blood cells, send the plasma product to a plasma product collection container, and return the second blood component to the donor. 10. The method of claim 9 , further comprising retrieving the donor data used to determine the target volume for plasma product and/or raw plasma from a Blood Establishment Computer Software system associated with a blood collection center. 11. The method of claim 10 , wherein the donor data comprises fixed donor data and variable donor data, wherein the fixed data is retrieved from a database and the variable data is measured within a predetermined period of time before the donation procedure, wherein the donor identifier comprises an image of the donor. 12. The method of claim 9 , wherein the remote computer functions as a donor management system for managing donor data comprising a date of a previous donation and answers to donor qualification questions. 13. A method of collecting plasma from a donor using a plasma collection device and a remote computer in communication with a Blood Establishment Computer Software system, comprising: receiving at the remote computer donor parameters comprising at least donor weight and height from the Blood Establishment Computer Software system; determining a target volume for raw plasma to collect by: determining the donor's total blood volume based on at least donor weight and height; determining the donor's total plasma volume based on at least the donor's total blood volume and donor hematocrit; determining the target volume to collect as a percentage of the donor's total plasma volume; receiving a donor identifier over a network from the remote computer at a controller local to the plasma collection device; displaying the donor identifier on a display of the plasma collection device; receiving a user input at the plasma collection device to confirm the donor; after confirming the donor, controlling the plasma collection device to draw whole blood from the donor, combine anticoagulant with the whole blood, separate the whole blood into a plasma product and a second blood component comprising red blood cells, send the plasma product to a plasma product collection container, and return the second blood component to the donor, the method operating a plurality of three draw and return phases until the target volume of raw plasma is reached. 14. The method of claim 13 , wherein the target volume for raw plasma is determined by the remote computer. 15. The method of claim 13 , further comprising receiving the donor parameters comprising at least donor weight and height at the plasma collection device, wherein the target volume for raw plasma is calculated by a controller local to the plasma collection device. 16. The method of claim 13 , wherein the percentage is no greater than 28.6%. 17. The method of claim 13 , wherein the donor identifier comprises an image of the donor. 18. The method of claim 13 , further comprising displaying donor name, donor date of birth, donor weight, donor hematocrit and target raw plasma to collect on the display of the plasma collection device. 19. The method of claim 13 , wherein the user input is received via a touchscreen button on the display of the plasma collection device. 20. The method of claim 13 , wherein determining the donor's total blood volume comprises calculating an indexed blood volume equal to (70/(sqrt(BMI/22))), wherein BMI is a body mass index of the donor.
