Embodiments are directed to methods and apparatuses for ensuring that mechanisms that are used to position components of an apheresis machine are not broken as a result of rotation of a centrifuge. In embodiments, a safety mechanism is provided that contacts components of the centrifuge and pushes them into a position to ensure that they do not break when the centrifuge is operated at high rpm.

What is claimed is: 1 . A safety mechanism configured to contact and change a position of a latch arm for a centrifuge assembly, the safety mechanism being configured to support tubing from a disposable set, the centrifuge assembly being configured to spin around an axis of rotation and separate composite liquids, the safety mechanism comprising: a base including a top surface and a bottom surface opposite the top surface; and an upright configured to engage the base on the top surface, wherein the upright includes a pair of arms extending in opposing directions, and each of the pair of arms defines a channel with the top surface of the base, each channel being configured to receive a different portion of the tubing, and the bottom surface of the base defines a contact surface configured to contact the latch arm to move the latch arm from a first upward position to a second downward position. 2 . The safety mechanism of claim 1 , wherein the contact surface is angled with respect to a line that is perpendicular to the axis of rotation of the centrifuge. 3 . The safety mechanism of claim 2 , wherein the contact surface is a first contact surface, and the bottom surface defines a second contact surface angled with respect to the line that is perpendicular to the axis of rotation. 4 . The safety mechanism of claim 3 , wherein the first contact surface is longer than the second contact surface. 5 . The safety mechanism of claim 3 , wherein the angle of the first contact surface is different than the angle of the second contact surface. 6 . The safety mechanism of claim 5 , wherein the angle of the first contact surface is less than the angle of the second contact surface. 7 . The safety mechanism of claim 3 , wherein the angle of the second contact surface is substantially the same as the angle of the first contact surface with respect to the line that is perpendicular to the axis of rotation. 8 . The safety mechanism of claim 3 , wherein the first contact surface, the second contact surface, or both the first contact surface and the second contact surface includes at least one material from the group consisting of polytetrafluoroethylene, polyoxymethylene, polyetheretherketon, polyethylene, Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene, polyamide, polycarbonate, or combinations thereof. 9 . The safety mechanism of claim 1 , further comprising a fastener for securing the upright to the base. 10 . The safety mechanism of claim 9 , wherein the fastener includes a shaft and a head, the shaft being engaged with the upright and the head being engaged with the base. 11 . The safety mechanism of claim 10 , wherein the fastener includes threads arranged on a shaft of the fastener such that when the centrifuge assembly is spun, a Coriolis force has a tightening effect on the fastener. 12 . The safety mechanism of claim 10 , wherein the fastener is a screw. 13 . A centrifuge assembly for separating composite liquids, the centrifuge assembly comprising: a centrifuge configured to rotate about a rotational axis; a latch arm configured to align a portion of a disposable with respect to the centrifuge; a tubing arm configured to hold tubing of the disposable; and a safety arm configured to support the tubing arm, the safety arm including a base having a top surface and a bottom surface opposite the top surface, and an upright configured to engage the base on the top surface, wherein the upright includes a pair of arms extending in opposing directions, and each of the pair of arms defines a channel with the top surface of the base, each channel being configured to receive a different portion of the tubing arm, and the bottom surface of the base defines a contact surface configured to contact the latch arm to move the latch arm from a first upward position to a second downward position. 14 . The centrifuge assembly of claim 13 , wherein at least a portion of the tubing arm is positioned between the base and the upright of the safety arm. 15 . The centrifuge assembly of claim 14 , wherein the base includes a first channel for positioning the portion of the tubing arm. 16 . The centrifuge assembly of claim 15 , wherein the base includes a second channel for positioning a second portion of the tubing arm. 17 . The centrifuge assembly of claim 16 , wherein the upright includes a channel for positioning a third portion of the tubing arm. 18 . The centrifuge assembly of claim 13 , wherein a fastener engages the base with the upright. 19 . The centrifuge assembly of claim 18 , wherein the fastener is threaded. 20 . The centrifuge assembly of claim 19 , wherein the fastener is positioned so that when the centrifuge assembly rotates, a force is applied to the fastener in a direction of tightening the fastener.
