Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A receptacle distribution system includes a rotary distributor and a receptacle handoff device. The rotary distributor includes a motorized turntable with an upright wall, a distributor head for holding a receptacle, a hook configured to engage a receptacle for moving the receptacle into or out of the distributor head, and an a system for powered elevation of the distributor head. The receptacle handoff device is configured to transfer a receptacle from a first receptacle distributor to the rotary distributor and includes a receptacle yoke configured to hold a receptacle placed in the receptacle yoke with the first receptacle distributor, the receptacle yoke being rotatable between a first position to receive the receptacle and a second position to present the receptacle to the rotary distributor to enable the hook of the rotary distributor to pull the receptacle from the receptacle yoke and into the distributor head.

The invention claimed is: 1. A receptacle distribution system for moving receptacles between different locations, the receptacle distribution system comprising: a rotary distributor comprising: a turntable; a rotary drive system configured to effect motorized rotation of the turntable; an upright wall attached to the turntable and rotatable therewith; a distributor head for holding a receptacle, the distributor head being supported for vertical motion along the upright wall; a hook that is extendible and retractable with respect to the distributor head and configured to engage a manipulating structure of a receptacle for pulling a receptacle into the distributor head or pushing a receptacle out of the distributor head; and a distributor elevation system configured to effect powered vertical motion of the distributor head, the distributor elevation system being supported on the turntable and rotatable therewith; and a receptacle handoff device configured to transfer a receptacle from a first receptacle distributor located outside the receptacle distribution system to the rotary distributor, the receptacle handoff device comprising: a receptacle yoke configured to receive and hold a receptacle placed in the receptacle yoke with the first receptacle distributor; a handoff device motor configured to rotate the receptacle yoke between a first position to receive the receptacle from the first receptacle distributor and a second position to present the manipulating structure of the receptacle to the rotary distributor to enable the hook of the rotary distributor to engage the manipulating structure to pull the receptacle from the receptacle yoke and into the distributor head. 2. The receptacle distribution system of claim 1 , wherein the distributor elevation system comprises: an elevation motor attached to the distributor head; a threaded rod extending upwardly from the turntable and coupled to the motor; and an internal thread drive, wherein rotation of the internal thread drive by the motor causes the motor and the distributor head to translate up or down the threaded rod. 3. The receptacle distribution system of claim 2 , wherein the distributor head is supported for vertical motion along the upright wall by a guide rail attached to the upright wall and a rail coupling for coupling the motor to the guide rail. 4. The receptacle distribution system of claim 3 , further comprising a sensor for detecting when the distributor head is in its lower most position. 5. The receptacle distribution system of claim 4 , wherein the sensor comprises a slotted optical sensor attached to the distributor head and having spaced prongs defining a receiver and transmitter of the optical sensor, and wherein the prongs of the sensor enter into openings formed in the turntable when the distributor head is at its lower most position to break an optical signal between the prongs. 6. The receptacle distribution system of claim 1 , wherein the rotary drive system comprises a motor having a rotary drive gear engaged with peripheral teeth of the turntable. 7. The receptacle distribution system of claim 1 , further comprising a turntable position sensor for detecting a rotational position of the turntable. 8. The receptacle distribution system of claim 1 , further comprising a rotary encoder coupled to the handoff device motor for controlling a rotational position of the receptacle yoke. 9. The receptacle distribution system of claim 1 , further comprising a home sensor configured to detect a home rotational position of the receptacle yoke. 10. The receptacle distribution system of claim 1 , wherein distributor head includes internal rails formed on inner walls of the distributor head, wherein the rails are configured to carry a reagent pack comprising a plurality of wells with a bottom edge of the reagent pack supported on the rails and a multiple receptacle device comprising a plurality of receptacles connected to one another by a connecting rib structure which defines downwardly facing shoulders extending longitudinally along either side of the multiple receptacle device and which are supported on the rails with the individual receptacles disposed between and at least partially below the rails. 11. The receptacle distribution system of claim 10 , wherein reagent pack is wider than the multiple receptacle device. 12. A rotary distributor system for moving receptacles between different locations, the receptacle distribution system comprising: a turntable; a rotary drive system configured to effect motorized rotation of the turntable; an upright wall attached to the turntable and rotatable therewith; a distributor head for holding a receptacle, the distributor head being supported for vertical motion along the upright wall; a hook that is extendible and retractable with respect to the distributor head and configured to engage a manipulating structure of a receptacle for pulling a receptacle into the distributor head or pushing a receptacle out of the distributor head; and a distributor elevation system configured to effect powered vertical motion of the distributor head, the distributor elevation system being supported on the turntable and rotatable therewith.
