Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A method for forming a solar panel can include attaching one or more tacking pads to one or both of a first surface of a first solar panel subassembly and a second surface of a second solar panel subassembly. The method further includes dispensing an adhesive onto at least one of the first and second surfaces. The first and second surfaces are placed in contact with the one or more tacking pads, thereby tacking the first and second solar panel subassemblies together, during which the first and second surfaces contact the adhesive, thereby decreasing a thickness and increasing a surface area of the adhesive. Subsequently, the adhesive is cured. The tacking pad(s) maintain fixed alignment of the solar panel subassemblies during curing of the adhesive, and establish a bond line of the adhesive.

The invention claimed is: 1. A solar panel, comprising: a first solar panel subassembly comprising an array of solar cells; a second solar panel subassembly comprising a printed circuit; at least one tacking pad between the first solar panel subassembly and the second solar panel subassembly, and adhered to a first surface of the first solar panel subassembly and a second surface of the second solar panel subassembly with a first adhesive force; and an adhesive layer between the first solar panel subassembly and the second solar panel subassembly, and adhered to the first and second surfaces with a second adhesive force that is greater than the first adhesive force. 2. The solar panel of claim 1 , wherein the at least one tacking pad comprises a plurality of tacking pads, and wherein each of the tacking pads comprises a width greater than or equal to 0.1 inches and less than or equal to 0.5 inches. 3. The solar panel of claim 1 , wherein the adhesive layer comprises a plurality of physically spaced adhesive dots. 4. The solar panel of claim 1 , wherein the at least one tacking pad is a pressure-sensitive tacking pad. 5. The solar panel of claim 1 , wherein the at least one tacking pad comprises a polymer carrier and acrylic adhesive. 6. The solar panel of claim 1 , wherein the adhesive layer comprises silicone elastomer. 7. The solar panel of claim 1 , wherein the at least one tacking pad is attached to the first and second surfaces with an adhesion force greater than or equal to 25 ounces per square inch (oz/in 2 ) and less than or equal to 45 oz/in 2 . 8. The solar panel of claim 1 , wherein the adhesive layer extends across, and physically contacts, greater than or equal to 40% and less than or equal to 90% of an area of the first surface. 9. The solar panel of claim 1 , wherein a thickness of the at least one tacking pad is within ±5% of a bond line of the adhesive layer. 10. The solar panel of claim 1 , wherein the at least one tacking pad comprises a polymer cattier between two layers of acrylic adhesive. 11. The solar panel of claim 1 , wherein the at least one tacking pad comprises adhesive tape. 12. The solar panel of claim 1 , wherein the adhesive layer extends across, and physically contacts, greater than or equal to 40% and less than or equal to 90% of an area of the second surface. 13. The solar panel of claim 1 , wherein a ratio of the second adhesive force to the first adhesive force is greater than or equal to 19:1. 14. An electronic device comprising a plurality of solar panels, wherein each of the solar panels comprises: a first solar panel subassembly comprising an array of solar cells; a second solar panel subassembly comprising a printed circuit; at least one tacking pad between the first solar panel subassembly and the second solar panel subassembly, and adhered to a first surface of the first solar panel subassembly and a second surface of the second solar panel subassembly with a first adhesive force; and an adhesive layer between the first solar panel subassembly and the second solar panel subassembly, and adhered to the first and second surfaces with a second adhesive force that is greater than the first adhesive force. 15. The electronic device of claim 14 , further comprising: at least one battery electrically coupled to the solar panels. 16. A solar panel, comprising: a first solar panel subassembly comprising at least one solar cell; a second solar panel subassembly comprising a printed circuit; at least one tacking pad between the first solar panel subassembly and the second solar panel subassembly, and adhered to a first surface of the first solar panel subassembly and a second surface of the second solar panel subassembly with a first adhesive force; and adhesive between the first solar panel subassembly and the second solar panel subassembly, and adhered to the first and second surfaces with a second adhesive force that is greater than the first adhesive force. 17. The solar panel of 16 , wherein the first solar panel subassembly comprises two or more solar cells. 18. The solar panel of claim 16 , wherein the adhesive comprises heat-curable adhesive. 19. The solar panel of claim 16 , wherein the adhesive comprises silicone elastomer. 20. The solar panel of claim 16 , wherein a ratio of the second adhesive force to the first adhesive force is greater than or equal to 19:1.
