A system includes: a light source; first and second gratings; and at least one reflective component that in a first position forms a first light path originating at the light source and extending to the first grating and thereafter to a subsequent component in the system, and that in a second position forms a second light path originating at the light source and extending to the second grating and thereafter to the subsequent component.

First claim

What is claimed is: 1. A system comprising: a light source; a first grating; a second grating; a rotatable reflective component that is rotatable between a first position and a second position; and a phase selector; wherein, when the rotatable reflective component is in the first position, the rotatable reflective component forms a first light path comprising the light source, the first grating, and the phase selector, and wherein, when the rotatable reflective component is in the second position, the rotatable reflective component forms a second light path comprising the light source, the second grating, and the phase selector. 2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the first grating comprises a first substrate having a first periodic structure, and wherein the second grating comprises a second substrate having a second periodic structure. 3. The system of claim 2 , wherein the first periodic structure has a first grating orientation and the second periodic structure has a second grating orientation, wherein the first grating orientation is substantially perpendicular to the second grating orientation. 4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the first grating comprises a first prism, and wherein the second grating comprises a second prism. 5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the first grating is positioned substantially perpendicular to the second grating. 6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the rotatable reflective component comprises a rotatable mirror. 7. The system of claim 6 , wherein the rotatable mirror is double sided. 8. The system of claim 6 , wherein the rotatable mirror reciprocates between the first position and the second position. 9. The system of claim 1 , wherein the rotatable reflective component comprises a rotatable prism. 10. The system of claim 1 , wherein the light source comprises a fiber optic cable. 11. The system of claim 1 , wherein light from the light source comprises a laser beam of one or more wavelengths. 12. The system of claim 1 further comprising a projection lens. 13. The system of claim 1 , wherein the phase selector comprises a piezo actuator. 14. A system comprising: a light source; a first grating; a second grating; a translatable reflective component that is translatable between a first position and a second position; and a phase selector; wherein, when the translatable reflective component is in the first position, the translatable reflective component forms a first light path comprising the light source, the first grating, and the phase selector, and wherein, when the translatable reflective component is in the second position, the translatable reflective component forms a second light path comprising the light source, the second grating, and the phase selector. 15. The system of claim 14 , wherein the first grating comprises a first substrate having a first periodic structure, and wherein the second grating comprises a second substrate having a second periodic structure. 16. The system of claim 15 , wherein the first periodic structure has a first grating orientation and the second periodic structure has a second grating orientation, wherein the first grating orientation is substantially perpendicular to the second grating orientation. 17. The system of claim 14 , wherein the translatable reflective component comprises a translatable mirror. 18. The system of claim 17 , wherein the translatable mirror is horizontally translatable relative to the first grating. 19. The system of claim 17 , wherein the translatable mirror is vertically translatable relative to the first grating. 20. A system comprising: a light source; a first grating comprising a first periodic structure and a first prism; a second grating comprising a second periodic structure and a second prism; a rotatable mirror that is reciprocally rotatable between a first position and a second position; and a phase selector; wherein, when the rotatable mirror is in the first position, the rotatable mirror forms a first light path comprising the light source, the first grating, and the phase selector, and wherein, when the rotatable mirror is in the second position, the rotatable mirror forms a second light path comprising the light source, the second grating, and the phase selector.
