Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Systems and methods of processing items. Items in a distribution network or process may be scanned at every handling point in the distribution network, and each scan is recorded in a central repository. The scan information can be used to generate real-time access to data, analytical tools, predictive tools, and tracking reports.

What is claimed is: 1. A method for delivering items comprising: storing geofence data for a plurality of delivery points and information regarding items for delivery to the plurality of delivery points; detecting the geographic location of a mobile computing device along a delivery route comprising the plurality of delivery points; determining the mobile computing device's geographic location with regard to a geofence for one of the plurality of delivery points to which at least one of the plurality of items is to be delivered; generating a delivery notification based on the determination of the mobile computing device's geographic location with regard to the geofence; and sending the generated item delivery notification to an item recipient of the at least one of the plurality of items. 2. The method of claim 1 , wherein generating the delivery notification based on the determination of the mobile computing device's geographic location with regard to the geofence when the geographic location comprises generating the delivery notification when the mobile computing device has entered the geofence for one of the plurality of delivery points to which the at least one of the plurality of items is to be delivered. 3. The method of claim 1 , wherein generating the notification comprises generating the notification when the geographic location of the mobile computing device indicates that the mobile computing device has entered the geofence for one of the plurality of delivery points to which the at least one of the plurality of items is to be delivered. 4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising recording a handling event in the data repository based on the determining of the location of the mobile device regard to a geofence for one of the plurality of delivery points to which at least one of the plurality of items is to be delivered. 5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the handling event is a logical handling event. 6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the logical handling event is a delivery event. 7. The method of claim 4 , wherein recording the handling event comprises recording the handling event when the mobile device enters the geofence for the one of the plurality of delivery points. 8. The method of claim 4 , wherein recording the handling event comprises recording the handling event when the mobile device exits the geofence for the one of the plurality of delivery points. 9. The method of claim 4 , wherein generating a delivery notification based on the determination of the mobile computing device's geographic location with regard to the geofence comprises generating the delivery notification when the mobile device passes through the geofence for a last one of the plurality of delivery points. 10. The method of claim 1 , wherein generating an item delivery notification for the at least one of the plurality of items is based on the determined location of the mobile computing device. 11. The method of claim 1 , further comprising determining that the mobile delivery device has passed through a geofence for a last one of the plurality of delivery points, and generating an item delivery notification for the at least one of the plurality of items based on determining that the mobile device passed through the geofence for the last one of the plurality of delivery points. 12. A system for delivering items comprising: means for storing geofence data for a plurality of delivery points and information regarding items for delivery to the plurality of delivery points; means for detecting the geographic location of a mobile computing device along a delivery route comprising the plurality of delivery points; means for determining the mobile computing device's geographic location with regard to a geofence for one of the plurality of delivery points to which at least one of the plurality of items is to be delivered; means for generating a delivery notification based on the determination of the mobile computing device's geographic location with regard to the geofence; and means for sending the generated item delivery notification to an item recipient of the at least one of the plurality of items. 13. The system of claim 12 , wherein the means for generating the delivery notification based on the determination of the mobile computing device's geographic location with regard to the geofence when the geographic location are further configured to generate the delivery notification when the mobile computing device has entered the geofence for one of the plurality of delivery points to which the at least one of the plurality of items is to be delivered.
