Embodiments of a system and method for sorting and sequencing articles in a processing facility are disclosed. Delivery endpoints are divided and grouped into stop groups. A first sorter sorts items according to stop group and outputs the items to trays. The output trays from the first sorter are loaded to a second sorter in stop group order. The second sorter can then sort the items into output bins in delivery sequence order.

What is claimed is: 1. A method for sorting items comprising: generating, in a processor, a sorting scheme comprising a first pass and a second pass; receiving, in an intake system of item processing equipment, a plurality of items to be sequenced, the intake system comprising a scanner; reading, by the scanner, an intended delivery point located on each of the plurality of items; sorting, in the first pass in a sorting portion of the item processing equipment, each of the plurality of items into one of a plurality of containers based on the read intended delivery point for each of the plurality of items and based on the sorting scheme; moving, by a container manipulator, the plurality of containers from the item processing equipment into a storage area located apart from the item processing equipment; storing, in a memory, the location of the containers within the storage area; and identifying, in the processor, one of the plurality of containers containing items to process in the second pass according to the generated sorting scheme; querying, by the processor, the memory to determine the stored location within the storage area of the identified one of the plurality of containers; retrieving, by the container manipulator, the identified one of the plurality of containers from the determined stored location within the storage area; reintroducing the one of the plurality of containers into the intake system; and sorting, in the second pass, the items from the plurality of containers, according to the sorting scheme. 2. The method of claim 1 , wherein generating the sorting scheme comprises dividing a plurality of delivery destinations into a plurality of stop groups. 3. The method of claim 2 , wherein sorting each of the plurality of items comprises identifying the stop group associated with the scanned intended delivery destination. 4. The method of claim 3 , wherein sorting each of the plurality of items further comprises sorting each the plurality of items into one of the plurality of containers according to the stop group associated with each of the plurality of items. 5. The method of claim 4 , wherein identifying the one of the plurality of containers to process comprises identifying the one of the containers according to the stop groups associated with the items therein. 6. The method of claim 2 , wherein dividing a plurality of delivery destinations into a plurality of stop groups comprises dividing the delivery destinations based on a scheme, a carrier, and a stop number. 7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the locations within the storage area comprise a plurality of shelves, each of the plurality of shelves having a unique identifier. 8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of containers each comprise a computer readable identifier. 9. The method of claim 8 , wherein sorting each of the plurality of items into one of a plurality of containers comprises associating, the computer readable code on each of the plurality of containers with the contents of the container. 10. The method of claim 8 , wherein the location of the container comprises an identifier for the one compartment of the plurality of compartments in which the container is located. 11. A system for sorting items comprising: means for generating a sorting scheme for a distribution facility; means for receiving a plurality of items to be sequenced; means for reading an intended delivery point on a plurality of items; means for sorting each of the plurality of items into one of a plurality of containers based on the read intended delivery point for each of the plurality of items and based on the sorting scheme; means for moving one of the plurality of containers from the item processing equipment into a storage area located apart from the storage area; means for storing the location of the containers within the storage area; and means for identifying one of the plurality of containers to process according to the generated sorting scheme; means for querying the memory to determine the stored location within the storage area of the identified one of the plurality of containers; means for retrieving the identified one of the plurality of containers from determined stored location within the storage area; and means for reintroducing the one of the plurality of containers into the intake system.
