The invention provides a method, apparatus and system for separating blood and other types of cellular components, and can be combined with holographic optical trapping manipulation or other forms of optical tweezing. One of the exemplary methods includes providing a first flow having a plurality of blood components; providing a second flow; contacting the first flow with the second flow to provide a first separation region; and differentially sedimenting a first blood cellular component of the plurality of blood components into the second flow while concurrently maintaining a second blood cellular component of the plurality of blood components in the first flow. The second flow having the first blood cellular component is then differentially removed from the first flow having the second blood cellular component. Holographic optical traps may also be utilized in conjunction with the various flows to move selected components from one flow to another, as part of or in addition to a separation stage.

What is claimed is: 1. An apparatus to identify at least one selected component from a plurality of components in a fluid mixture, the apparatus comprising: a plurality of sorting channels, each sorting channel in the plurality of sorting channels comprising: a sorting channel having a first inlet into which a first flow is introduced, the first flow which contains the plurality of components, a second inlet into which a secondary flow is introduced, a first outlet from which the first flow exits, and a second outlet from which at least a portion of the secondary flow exits; a constricted region within the sorting channel, the constricted region comprises a narrowing of a diameter in the constricted region in a first direction; and a region with a bubble trap, wherein the selected component exits the apparatus through the second outlet; and wherein the unselected component exits the apparatus by an outlet other than the second outlet of the sorting channel. 2. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the region constricts a width of the first flow as the first flow travels through the region. 3. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a detector apparatus, wherein the detector apparatus determines a characteristic of each component among the plurality of components. 4. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a selection apparatus, wherein each component is selected or unselected based on the characteristic of each component. 5. An apparatus to identify at least one selected component from a plurality of components in a fluid mixture, the apparatus comprising: a plurality of sorting channels, each sorting channel in the plurality of sorting channels comprising: a sorting channel having a first inlet into which a first flow is introduced, the first flow which contains the plurality of components, a second inlet into which a secondary flow is introduced, a first outlet from which the first flow exits, and a second outlet from which at least a portion of the secondary flow exits; a constricted region within the sorting channel, the constricted region comprises a narrowing in a first direction; and a region with a bubble trap; wherein the selected component exits the apparatus through the second outlet; and wherein the unselected component exits the apparatus by an outlet other than the second outlet of the sorting channel. 6. The apparatus of claim 5 , wherein the region constricts a width of the first flow as the first flow travels through the region. 7. The apparatus of claim 5 , further comprising a detector apparatus, wherein the detector apparatus determines a characteristic of each component among the plurality of components. 8. The apparatus of claim 5 , further comprising a selection apparatus, wherein each component is selected or unselected based on the characteristic of each component.
