Official abstract text for this publication.
The invention provides a method, apparatus and system for separating blood and other types of cellular components, and can be combined with holographic optical trapping manipulation or other forms of optical tweezing. One of the exemplary methods includes providing a first flow having a plurality of blood components; providing a second flow; contacting the first flow with the second flow to provide a first separation region; and differentially sedimenting a first blood cellular component of the plurality of blood components into the second flow while concurrently maintaining a second blood cellular component of the plurality of blood components in the first flow. The second flow having the first blood cellular component is then differentially removed from the first flow having the second blood cellular component. Holographic optical traps may also be utilized in conjunction with the various flows to move selected components from one flow to another, as part of or in addition to a separation stage.

What is claimed is: 1. A method for identifying at least one selected component from a plurality of components in a fluid mixture, the method comprising: introducing a first flow into a first inlet of a sorting channel, the first flow comprising the plurality of components; introducing a secondary flow into a second inlet of the sorting channel; constricting the first flow and aligning the plurality of components in a constricted region within the sorting channel, wherein the constricted region comprises a narrowing of a diameter in the constricted region in a first direction; diverting the at least one selected component from the first flow to the secondary flow; suppressing a pulsation in the flows via an air pocket; expelling the first flow from the sorting channel through a first outlet; and expelling at least a portion of the secondary flow from the sorting channel through a second outlet; wherein the at least one selected component exits the sorting channel through the second outlet. 2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the region constricts a width of the first flow as the first flow travels through the region. 3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the method further comprises determining a characteristic of each component among the plurality of components. 4. The method of claim 3 , further comprising determining the characteristic of each component among the plurality of components by a detector apparatus. 5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the method further comprises selecting or unselecting each component in the plurality of components based on the characteristic of each component. 6. The method of claim 5 , further comprising selecting or unselecting each component in the plurality of components based on the characteristic of each component by a selector apparatus. 7. A method for identifying at least one selected component from a plurality of components in a fluid mixture, the method comprising: introducing a first flow into a first inlet of a sorting channel, the first flow comprising the plurality of components; introducing a secondary flow into a second inlet of the sorting channel; constricting the first flow and aligning the plurality of components in a constricted region within the sorting channel, wherein the constricted region comprises a narrowing in a first direction; exerting a force upon the at least one selected component to manipulate the at least one selected component from the first flow to the secondary flow; suppressing a pulsation via an air pocket acting as a shock absorber; expelling the first flow from the sorting channel through a first outlet; and expelling at least a portion of the secondary flow from the sorting channel through a second outlet; wherein the at least one selected component exits the sorting channel through the second outlet. 8. A method for identifying at least one selected component from a plurality of components in a fluid mixture, the method comprising: introducing a first flow into a first inlet of a sorting channel containing a region with an air pocket for pulsation suppression, the first flow comprising the plurality of components; introducing a secondary flow into two or more inlets of the sorting channel; constricting the first flow and aligning the plurality of components in a constricted region within the sorting channel, wherein the constricted region comprises a narrowing in a first direction; expelling the first flow from the sorting channel through a first outlet; and expelling at least a portion of the secondary flow from the sorting channel through a second outlet; wherein the at least one selected component exits the sorting channel through the second outlet.
