Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A microphone can include an adapter housing. The adapter housing can include an opening and an outer acoustic port. The microphone can include an internal microphone assembly disposed at least partially within the adapter housing. The internal microphone assembly can include an internal housing having an internal acoustic port. The internal microphone assembly can include a plurality of contacts disposed on the internal housing. The contacts can be accessible through the opening of the adapter housing. An interior of the internal housing can be acoustically coupled to the outer acoustic port via the internal acoustic port.

We claim: 1. A microphone comprising: a form-factor adapter housing including an opening and an outer acoustic port; and an internal microphone assembly disposed at least partially within the adapter housing, the internal microphone assembly including: an internal housing having an internal acoustic port and a base having an external surface, where at least a portion of the external surface of the base is covered by the adapter housing; a plurality of electrical interface contacts disposed on the external surface of the base, the contacts physically accessible from outside the adapter housing through the opening of the adapter housing; and a microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) motor and an integrated circuit disposed in the internal housing, the integrated circuit electrically coupled to the MEMS motor and to the contacts, wherein the MEMS motor is acoustically coupled to the outer acoustic port via a sound path between the adapter housing, the internal housing, and the internal acoustic port. 2. The microphone of claim 1 in combination with an adapter interface having a plurality of host device contacts each coupled to a corresponding contact on the internal housing by an electrical trace. 3. The microphone of claim 2 , wherein the internal housing comprises a cover mounted on the base, the contacts are surface-mount contacts and comprise a negative contact located between an output signal contact and a positive contact, and wherein the adapter interface is a flex circuit, the plurality of host interface contacts of the flex circuit comprising a host output signal contact located between a host positive contact and a host negative contact. 4. The microphone of claim 1 , wherein the sound path comprises an acoustic channel between the internal housing and the adapter housing and the internal acoustic port is acoustically coupled to the outer acoustic port by the acoustic channel. 5. The microphone of claim 4 , wherein the acoustic channel is a tortuous path, where the tortuous path is an ingress barrier to light or particle contamination. 6. The microphone of claim 4 , wherein the acoustic channel is configured to tune acoustic properties of the microphone. 7. The microphone of claim 6 , wherein the acoustic properties include inertance, compliance, or resistance. 8. The microphone of claim 6 , wherein the acoustic channel includes a resonator cavity. 9. The microphone of claim 4 , further comprising a support member separating at least a portion of the adapter housing from at least a portion of the internal housing. 10. The microphone of claim 9 , wherein the support member defines at least a portion of the acoustic channel. 11. The microphone of claim 10 , wherein a structure of the support member modifies an acoustic property of sound propagating through the acoustic channel. 12. The microphone of claim 1 , wherein the MEMS motor separates the internal housing into a back volume and a front volume acoustically coupled to the internal acoustic port, the internal housing including a back volume port acoustically coupling the back volume to a space between the adapter housing and the internal housing. 13. The microphone of claim 1 , the internal housing comprises a cover mounted on the base, wherein the contacts are surface-mount contacts, the adapter housing comprises a cover mounted to the base of the internal housing, wherein the internal housing and adapter housing share the base as a common base. 14. The microphone of claim 1 , the internal housing comprises a cover mounted on the base, wherein the internal acoustic port and the MEMS motor are located on the base. 15. The microphone of claim 14 , wherein the sound path is an acoustic channel between the internal housing and the adapter housing, the opening disposed on a first side of the adapter housing and the outer acoustic port disposed on a second side of the adapter housing, the second side of the adapter housing opposite the first side of the adapter housing. 16. The microphone of claim 14 , wherein the sound path is an acoustic channel between the internal housing and the adapter housing, the opening disposed on a first side of the adapter housing and the outer acoustic port disposed on a second side of the adapter housing, the second side of the adapter housing non-parallel to the first side of the adapter housing. 17. The microphone of claim 14 , wherein the sound path is an acoustic channel between the internal housing and the adapter housing, wherein the MEMS motor is a capacitive device comprising a diaphragm separating the internal housing into a back volume having a height dimensions h 1 and a front volume having a height dimension h 2 perpendicular to a surface of the diaphragm, the acoustic channel having a height dimension h 3 , perpendicular to the surface of the diaphragm, wherein h 3 >h 1 +h 2 . 18. The microphone of claim 17 , wherein the opening is disposed on a first side of the adapter housing and the outer acoustic port disposed on a second side of the adapter housing, wherein the second side of the adapter housing opposite the first side of the adapter housing and the height dimension h 3 extends between the first and second sides of the adapter housing.
