Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A hand-held band saw has a housing having an opening defining a cut zone. A first wheel and a second wheel are supported by the housing. The first and second wheels define a blade support portion configured to support a continuous blade to be driven through the cut zone. A handle extends from the housing, the handle having a grip portion. A blade guard is coupled to the housing and configured to move between open and closed positions with respect to the housing. The blade guard is configured to cover the blade support portion in the closed position. A chip vent is configured to provide an outlet for workpiece debris formed during a cutting operation, and a tire brush is configured to engage at least one of the first or second wheels to remove workpiece debris from the at least one of the first or second wheels.

First claim

What is claimed is: 1. A hand-held band saw for cutting a workpiece, the hand-held band saw comprising: a housing having an opening defining a cut zone, wherein a first portion of the housing is disposed on a first side of the opening and a second portion of the housing is disposed on a second side of the opening; a first wheel supported by the first portion of the housing; a second wheel supported by the second portion of the housing, wherein the first and second wheels define a blade support portion configured to support a continuous blade to be driven through the cut zone; a motor operably coupled to the first wheel; a handle extending from the housing, the handle having a grip portion; a blade guard coupled to the housing and configured to move between open and closed positions with respect to the housing, wherein the blade guard is configured to cover the blade support portion in the closed position; and a tire brush configured to engage at least one of the first and second wheels to remove workpiece debris from the at least one of the first and second wheels; wherein the blade guard includes a blade guard opening proximate one of the first and second wheels, and wherein the tire brush is disposed proximate the blade guard opening. 2. The hand-held band saw of claim 1 , wherein the tire brush is coupled to the blade guard. 3. The hand-held band saw of claim 1 , wherein the first wheel is configured to pull the continuous blade out of the cut zone and the second wheel is configured to feed the continuous blade into the cut zone, wherein the tire brush is disposed proximate the first wheel. 4. The hand-held band saw of claim 1 , wherein the tire brush includes bristles. 5. The hand-held band saw of claim 4 , wherein the bristles are replaceable with the blade guard in the open position. 6. The hand-held band saw of claim 1 , further comprising a receptacle configured to receive the tire brush and a cap configured to sandwich the tire brush within the receptacle, wherein the cap is removably secured such that the tire brush is replaceable with the cap removed. 7. The hand-held band saw of claim 6 , wherein the receptacle is disposed in the blade guard such that the tire brush is removably coupled to the blade guard. 8. A hand-held band saw for cutting a workpiece, the hand-held band saw comprising: a housing having an opening defining a cut zone, wherein a first portion of the housing is disposed on a first side of the opening and a second portion of the housing is disposed on a second side of the opening; a first wheel supported by the first portion of the housing; a second wheel supported by the second portion of the housing, wherein the first and second wheels define a blade support portion configured to support a continuous blade to be driven through the cut zone; a motor operably coupled to the first wheel; a handle extending from the housing, the handle having a grip portion; a blade guard coupled to the housing and configured to move between open and closed positions with respect to the housing, wherein the blade guard is configured to cover the blade support portion in the closed position; and a tire brush configured to engage at least one of the first and second wheels to remove workpiece debris from the at least one of the first and second wheels; a receptacle configured to receive the tire brush; and a cap configured to sandwich the tire brush between the receptacle and the cap, wherein the cap is removably secured to the receptacle such that the tire brush is replaceable with the cap removed. 9. A hand-held band saw for cutting a workpiece, the hand-held band saw comprising: a housing having an opening defining a cut zone, wherein a first portion of the housing is disposed on a first side of the opening and a second portion of the housing is disposed on a second side of the opening; a first wheel supported by the first portion of the housing; a second wheel supported by the second portion of the housing, wherein the first and second wheels define a blade support portion configured to support a continuous blade to be driven through the cut zone; a motor operably coupled to the first wheel; a handle extending from the housing, the handle having a grip portion; a tire brush configured to engage at least one of the first and second wheels to remove workpiece debris from the at least one of the first and second wheels; a receptacle configured to receive the tire brush; and a cap configured to sandwich the tire brush between the receptacle and the cap, wherein the cap is removably secured to the receptacle such that the tire brush is replaceable with the cap removed.
