Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A hand-held band saw having a deck defining a front and a rear, and an opening in the front defining a cut zone. The band saw also includes a first wheel supported by a first deck portion, a second wheel supported by a second deck portion, a motor operably coupled to the first wheel, a single handle providing a single grip for a user to hold the band saw with only one hand, and a continuous blade having a cutting edge. The continuous blade includes a first portion positioned in the cut zone for performing a cutting operation and a second portion positioned outside of the cut zone. A blade guard is positioned proximate the cutting edge of the second portion of the continuous blade to substantially provide a barrier between the cutting edge and an exterior of the band saw.

First claim

What is claimed is: 1. A hand-held band saw for cutting a workpiece, the hand-held band saw comprising: a deck defining a front and a rear, the deck having an opening in the front defining a cut zone and a first deck portion generally located on a first side of the opening and a second deck portion generally located on a second side of the opening; a first wheel supported by the first deck portion; a second wheel supported by the second deck portion; a motor operably coupled to the first wheel; a handle providing a grip for a user to hold the band saw with one hand; a continuous blade supported by the first and second wheels, the continuous blade having a cutting edge, wherein the continuous blade includes a first portion positioned in the cut zone for performing a cutting operation and a second portion positioned outside of the cut zone; a blade guard positioned proximate the cutting edge of the second portion of the continuous blade to substantially provide a barrier between the cutting edge and an exterior of the band saw; a joint between the blade guard and the deck such that the blade guard is movable with respect to the deck; a latch including a cantilevered spring arm configured to deflect under a force for selectively closing and opening the blade guard with respect to the deck; and at least one projection, wherein the cantilevered spring arm is configured to deflect in cooperation with the at least one projection to selectively close and open the blade guard with respect to the deck. 2. The hand-held band saw of claim 1 , wherein the blade guard further comprises chip vents proximate the cut zone for providing an outlet for workpiece chips. 3. The hand-held band saw of claim 1 , wherein the joint includes a hinged joint between the blade guard and the deck. 4. The hand-held band saw of claim 3 , wherein the hinged joint is positioned at the rear of the deck generally opposite the cut zone. 5. The hand-held band saw of claim 1 , wherein the latch is positioned proximate the front of the deck, wherein the joint includes a hinged joint between the blade guard and the deck proximate the rear of the deck. 6. The hand-held band saw of claim 1 , wherein the latch includes a sliding member movable between a locked position in which the blade guard is coupled to the deck and an unlocked position in which the blade guard is movable with respect to the deck. 7. The hand-held band saw of claim 6 , wherein the sliding member includes the cantilevered spring arm, wherein the latch further includes a detent mechanism providing a threshold to the force for sliding the sliding member between the locked and unlocked positions. 8. The hand-held band saw of claim 7 , wherein the detent mechanism includes: a first projection formed on one of the deck and the blade guard, the first projection extending toward the sliding member; a second projection projecting from the cantilevered spring arm cooperating with the first projection to provide the threshold force for sliding the sliding member between the locked and unlocked positions, wherein the cantilevered spring arm deflects under a force greater than the threshold force such that the sliding member slides past the first projection, and wherein the second projection abuts the first projection when a force lower than the threshold force is applied to the sliding member. 9. The hand-held band saw of claim 1 , wherein the blade guard includes an opening positioned proximate at least a portion of a circumference of the first wheel. 10. The hand-held band saw of claim 9 , wherein the opening is a first opening and wherein the blade guard includes a second opening proximate at least a portion of a circumference of the second wheel. 11. The hand-held band saw of claim 1 , further comprising a wear plate positioned between the blade guard and the cutting edge of the continuous blade. 12. The hand-held band saw of claim 11 , wherein the wear plate is positioned proximate the second wheel. 13. The hand-held band saw of claim 1 , further comprising a reinforcement plate formed of a rigid material and coupled to the deck for adding rigidity to the band saw. 14. The hand-held band saw of claim 13 , wherein the reinforcement plate includes a first portion disposed between the first wheel and the deck, a second portion disposed between the second wheel and the deck, and a bridge portion connecting the first portion to the second portion. 15. The hand-held band saw of claim 14 , further comprising a gear box formed of a metal for housing gears configured to couple the motor to the first wheel, wherein the first portion of the reinforcement plate is fastened to the gear box. 16. The hand-held band saw of claim 13 , wherein the reinforcement plate is formed of a metal. 17. The hand-held band saw of claim 1 , wherein the cantilevered spring arm deflects against the deck to selectively close and open the blade guard with respect to the deck. 18. The hand-held band saw of claim 1 , wherein the cantilevered spring arm cooperates with at least one projection extending from the front of the deck and is configured to deflect in contact with the at least one projection to selectively close and open the blade guard with respect to the deck. 19. The hand-held band saw of claim 1 , wherein the blade guard is movable between open and closed positions with respect to the deck about the joint; and wherein the blade guard includes a first portion on the first side of the opening of the deck, a second portion on the second side of the opening of the deck, and a third portion connecting the first and second portions proximate the rear of the deck, wherein the first, second, and third portions of the blade guard move as one piece between the open and closed positions with respect to the deck. 20. A hand-held band saw for cutting a workpiece, the hand-held band saw comprising: a deck defining a front and a rear, the deck having an opening in the front defining a cut zone and a first deck portion generally located on a first side of the opening and a second deck portion generally located on a second side of the opening; a first wheel supported by the first deck portion; a second wheel supported by the second deck portion; a motor operably coupled to the first wheel; a handle providing a grip for a user to hold the band saw with one hand; a continuous blade supported by the first and second wheels, the continuous blade having a cutting edge, wherein the continuous blade includes a first portion positioned in the cut zone for performing a cutting operation and a second portion positioned outside of the cut zone; a blade guard positioned proximate the cutting edge of the second portion of the continuous blade to substantially provide a barrier between the cutting edge and an exterior of the band saw; a joint between the blade guard and the deck such that the blade guard is movable with respect to the deck; and a latch including a cantilevered spring arm configured to deflect under a force for selectively closing and opening the blade guard with respect to the deck; wherein the cantilevered spring arm cooperates with at least one projection extending from the front of the deck and is configured to deflect in contact with the at least one projection to selectively close or open the blade guard with respect to the deck. 21.
