Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Inventive embodiments disclosed herein include a catheter for dilating a sinus cavity lumen. The catheter includes a guide tube, having a proximal end and a distal end, that terminates in a distal tip; a sleeve member annularly positioned over the guide tube, wherein the sleeve member is movable relative to the guide tube and is capable of being advanced over the guide tube; and a balloon coupled to the sleeve member, wherein the balloon can be extendable and inflated at or beyond the end of the guide tube.

What is claimed is: 1. A balloon dilation device, comprising: a guide tube, having a proximal end and a distal end, the distal end terminating in a distal tip; a sleeve member annularly positioned over the guide tube, wherein the sleeve member is movable relative to the guide tube and is capable of being advanced over the guide tube and past the distal tip; a balloon coupled to the sleeve member, wherein the balloon is extendable and inflatable at or beyond the distal tip of the guide tube; and a handle disposed along a proximal portion of the guide tube, the handle comprising a pushing member moveable in a distal direction relative to the handle and operatively coupled to the sleeve member, wherein distal advancement of the pushing member advances the sleeve member and the balloon over the guide tube in a distal direction. 2. The balloon dilation device of claim 1 , wherein the sleeve member comprises a sleeve tip that is distal of the balloon, and wherein the sleeve tip of the sleeve member abuts against the distal tip of the guide tube when the sleeve member is a retracted position relative to the handle. 3. The balloon dilation device of claim 2 , wherein the sleeve tip of the sleeve member is a ball tip. 4. The balloon dilation device of claim 1 , wherein the sleeve member is movable between a retracted position and an extended position relative to the handle, wherein, when the sleeve member is in the retracted position, at least a portion of the balloon is proximal of the distal tip of the guide tube, and wherein, when the sleeve member is in the extended position, at least a portion of the balloon is distal of the distal tip of the guide tube. 5. The balloon dilation device of claim 4 , wherein, when the sleeve member is in the retracted position, an entirety of the balloon is proximal of the distal tip of the guide tube, and wherein, when the sleeve member is in the extended position, the entirety of the balloon is distal of the distal tip of the guide tube. 6. The balloon dilation device of claim 4 , further comprising a ball tip abutting a distal-most end of the balloon such that the ball tip and the balloon extend beyond the distal tip of the guide tube when the sleeve member is in the extended position. 7. The balloon dilation device of claim 1 , wherein the guide tube has a fixed shape. 8. The balloon dilation device of claim 7 , wherein the fixed shape comprises a bend. 9. The balloon dilation device of claim 1 , wherein sleeve member comprises a distal portion having a diameter smaller than a proximal sleeve portion. 10. The balloon dilation device of claim 1 , wherein the guide tube is contained inside the sleeve member in a retracted position and an extended position, and wherein the balloon extends beyond the distal tip of the guide tube when the sleeve member is in the extended position. 11. A balloon dilation device, comprising: a handle having a proximal end and a distal end; a guide tube, having a proximal end and a distal end, wherein the guide tube extends longitudinally from the distal end of the handle in a distal direction, wherein the distal end terminates in a distal tip; a sleeve member annularly positioned over the guide tube, wherein the sleeve member is movable relative to the guide tube between a retracted position on the guide tube and an extended position on the guide tube, wherein the sleeve member is configured to be advanced over the guide tube and past the distal tip in the extended position, wherein the guide tube is contained inside the sleeve member in the retracted position and the extended position; and a balloon coupled to the sleeve member, wherein the balloon is moveable by the sleeve member relative to the guide tube, wherein the balloon is extendable and inflatable at or beyond the distal tip of the guide tube when the sleeve member is in the extended position. 12. The balloon dilation device of claim 11 , wherein sleeve member comprises a distal portion having a diameter smaller than a proximal sleeve portion. 13. The balloon dilation device of claim 11 , wherein the sleeve member comprises a sleeve tip that is distal of the balloon, wherein the sleeve tip of the sleeve member abuts against the distal tip of the guide tube when the sleeve member is in the retracted position relative to the handle. 14. The balloon dilation device of claim 13 , wherein the sleeve tip of the sleeve member is a ball tip. 15. The balloon dilation device of claim 11 , wherein, when the sleeve member is in the retracted position, at least a portion of the balloon is proximal of the distal tip of the guide tube, and wherein, when the sleeve member is in the extended position, at least a portion of the balloon is distal of the distal tip of the guide tube. 16. The balloon dilation device of claim 15 , wherein, when the sleeve member is in the retracted position, an entirety of the balloon is proximal of the distal tip of the guide tube, and wherein, when the sleeve member is in the extended position, the entirety of the balloon is distal of the distal tip of the guide tube. 17. The balloon dilation device of claim 15 , further comprising a ball tip abutting a distal-most end of the balloon such that the ball tip and the balloon extend beyond the distal tip of the guide tube when the sleeve member is in the extended position. 18. The balloon dilation device of claim 15 , wherein the handle comprises a pushing member moveable between a proximal position on the handle and a distal position on the handle to move the sleeve member between the retracted position and the extended position, respectively. 19. The balloon dilation device of claim 11 , wherein the guide tube has a fixed shape. 20. The balloon dilation device of claim 19 , wherein the fixed shape comprises a bend.
