Official abstract text for this publication.
The invention describes a sinus balloon catheter and methods of use. Specifically a sinus balloon catheter for dilating a sinus cavity lumen is provided with a tip that can be extended. The catheter comprises a guide tube with a proximal and distal end, a sleeve member, a balloon disposed upon the sleeve member and a rounded tip arranged at the distal end and extendable along with the extension of the sleeve member.

The invention claimed is: 1. A device for dilating a drainage pathway of a sinus cavity, comprising an inner guide member defining a first lumen; a handle secured to a proximal end of the inner guide member; a sleeve member defining a second lumen, wherein the inner guide member is at least partially disposed within the second lumen and the sleeve member is moveable with respect to the inner guide member, the sleeve member having a proximal end portion comprising a pair of slots having respective detents located in each slot, wherein the location of the detents forms a proximal slot portion and a distal slot portion; a balloon disposed on the sleeve member; a rounded tip member disposed at a position that is distal to a distal tip of both the sleeve member and the inner guide member, the rounded tip member connected to a wire extending proximally through the first lumen and the second lumen and terminating in a bar positioned within the pair of slots; and a balloon advancement member disposed in the handle and secured to the sleeve member and moveable between a proximal position and distal position, the balloon advancement member configured to advance and retract the sleeve member along the inner guide member, wherein when the balloon advancement member is retracted to the proximal position the bar contacts with a distal portion of the distal slot portion and wherein when the balloon advancement member is advanced distally, the bar contacts with a proximal portion of the distal slot portion and wherein when the balloon advancement member is further advanced to the distal position the bar moves to the proximal slot portion. 2. The device of claim 1 , wherein the detents provide resistance against distal advancement of the wire relative to the distal tip of the sleeve member. 3. The device of claim 1 , wherein the length of the distal slot portion is approximately equal to the length of a distal portion of the inner guide member that extends from a distal end of the sleeve member when the balloon advancement member is in the proximal position. 4. The device of claim 1 , wherein the rounded tip member is configured to move relative to only one of the tip of the sleeve member or the tip of the inner guide member at any one time. 5. The device of claim 4 , wherein the bar is configured to move with the sleeve member. 6. The device of claim 1 , wherein the bar is not secured to a handle. 7. The device of claim 1 , wherein the bar and wire are configured to advance or retract relative to the inner guide member. 8. The device of claim 1 , wherein the proximal end portion comprises a separate structure that is secured to the sleeve member. 9. The device of claim 1 , wherein the proximal end portion is formed integral with the sleeve member. 10. A method of treating a sinus cavity of a patient, comprising: providing the balloon dilation catheter of claim 1 ; directing a distal end of the inner guide member into the head of a patient through a nostril; directing the distal end of the inner guide member to a position near a sinus drainage pathway; advancing the sleeve member off the distal tip of the inner guide member and to a desired position within the sinus drainage pathway, wherein the rounded tip member remains next to the distal end of the sleeve member during the advancement of the sleeve member; and inflating the balloon to dilate the tissue defining the desired position.
