Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A system, including a first flow control element configured to couple to a stem, and a second flow control element coupled to the first flow control element, wherein the first and second flow control elements are configured to expand relative to one another to create a seal in a closed position between a chamber and a flow path in a valve body, and wherein the first and second flow control elements are configured to enable fluid flow between the chamber and the flow path in an open position.

The invention claimed is: 1. A system, comprising: a valve, comprising: a valve body having a fluid chamber along a fluid passage; a first valve seat extending circumferentially around the fluid passage; a first valve portion disposed in the fluid chamber, wherein the first valve portion comprises a first seat contact surface configured to seat against the first valve seat, and the first valve portion is configured to move between an open position and a closed position relative to the fluid passage; and a first fluid path extending between the fluid chamber and the fluid passage in the open position of the first valve portion, wherein the first fluid path is configured to enable pressure relief of fluid in the fluid chamber, and the first fluid path comprises a first groove extending lengthwise along the first seat contact surface between the fluid chamber and the fluid passage in the open position. 2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the valve comprises a second valve portion disposed in the fluid chamber, the first and second valve portions are configured to move relative to one another, and the first and second valve portions are configured to move between the open position and the closed position. 3. The system of claim 2 , comprising at least one angled interface between the first and second valve portions. 4. The system of claim 2 , wherein the valve comprises a gate valve, wherein the first and second valve portions are configured to expand away from one another against the first valve seat and a second valve seat, respectively, when moving from the open position toward the closed position. 5. The system of claim 4 , comprising at least one structure configured to block expansion of the first and second valve portions when moving from the closed position toward the open position. 6. The system of claim 2 , comprising a second fluid path extending between the fluid chamber and the fluid passage in the open position, wherein the second fluid path is configured to enable pressure relief of fluid in the fluid chamber. 7. The system of claim 6 , comprising a second valve seat extending circumferentially around the fluid passage, wherein the second valve portion comprises a second seat contact surface configured to seat against the second valve seat, and the second fluid path comprises a second groove extending lengthwise along the second seat contact surface between the fluid chamber and the fluid passage in the open position. 8. The system of claim 7 , wherein the first and second grooves extend lengthwise parallel to an axis of movement of the first and second valve portions. 9. The system of claim 1 , wherein the first valve portion comprises a first bore configured to substantially align with the fluid passage in the open position, and the first groove intersects the first bore. 10. The system of claim 9 , comprising a valve stem coupled to the first valve portion and configured to move the first valve portion between the open position and the closed position, wherein the first groove extends between the first bore and the valve stem. 11. The system of claim 1 , wherein the first fluid path extends across the first valve seat between the fluid chamber and the fluid passage only in the open position but not the closed position. 12. The system of claim 1 , wherein the fluid chamber is substantially sealed from the fluid passage in the closed position. 13. A system, comprising: a valve, comprising: a valve body having a fluid chamber along a fluid passage; first and second valve portions disposed in the fluid chamber, wherein the first and second valve portions are configured to move relative to one another, and the first and second valve portions are configured to move between an open position and a closed position relative to the fluid passage; and first and second fluid paths extending between the fluid chamber and the fluid passage in the open position of the first and second valve portions, wherein the first and second fluid paths are configured to enable pressure relief of fluid in the fluid chamber, the first fluid path extends at least partially into the first valve portion, and the second fluid path extends at least partially into the second valve portion. 14. The system of claim 13 , wherein the fluid chamber is substantially sealed from the fluid passage in the closed position. 15. The system of claim 13 , comprising a first valve seat extending circumferentially around the fluid passage, wherein the first valve portion comprises a first seat contact surface configured to seat against the first valve seat, and the first fluid path comprises a first groove extending lengthwise along the first seat contact surface between the fluid chamber and the fluid passage in the open position. 16. The system of claim 15 , comprising a second valve seat extending circumferentially around the fluid passage, wherein the second valve portion comprises a second seat contact surface configured to seat against the second valve seat, and the second fluid path comprises a second groove extending lengthwise along the second seat contact surface between the fluid chamber and the fluid passage in the open position. 17. A system, comprising: first and second valve portions configured to be disposed in a fluid chamber along a fluid passage, wherein the first and second valve portions are configured to move relative to one another, the first valve portion comprises a first bore, the second valve portion comprises a second bore, the first and second valve portions are configured to move between an open position and a closed position relative to the fluid passage, the first and second bores are disposed along the fluid passage in the open position, and the first and second bores are disposed away from the fluid passage in the closed position; a valve stem configured to move the first and second valve portions between the open position and the closed position; and a first fluid path configured to enable pressure relief of fluid in the fluid chamber into the fluid passage in the open position of the first and second valve portions, wherein the first fluid path is configured to extend between the fluid chamber and the fluid passage in the open position of the first and second valve portions, the first fluid path extends at least partially through the first valve portion between a first inlet and a first outlet in the first valve portion, the first fluid path is unobstructed between the first inlet and the first outlet, and the first fluid path is disposed between the first bore and the valve stem. 18. The system of claim 17 , comprising a first valve seat extending circumferentially around the fluid passage, wherein the first valve portion comprises a first seat contact surface configured to seat against the first valve seat, and the first fluid path comprises a first groove extending lengthwise along the first seat contact surface between the fluid chamber and the first bore in the open position. 19. The system of claim 17 , comprising a second fluid path configured to enable pressure relief of fluid in the fluid chamber into the fluid passage in the open position of the first and second valve portions, wherein the second fluid path is configured to extend between the fluid chamber and the fluid passage in the open position of the first and second valve portions, the second fluid path extends at least partially through the second valve portion between a second inlet and a second outlet in the second valve portion, the second fluid path is unobstructed betw
