Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Disclosed are preforms which incorporate improvements in the region of the neck and upper segment of the body to allow the production of lightweight containers, such as bottles suitable for containing water or other beverages. In accordance with certain embodiments, the improvements include a thinner neck finish area than conventional bottles, where the thinner area is extended into the upper segment of the body portion below the support ring. Reducing the thickness in these areas of the bottle allows for less resin to be used in forming the preform and bottle.

What is claimed is: 1. A preform suitable to form a container, the preform comprising: a neck portion having an opening to an interior of the preform; a tapered portion including a smooth transition from a diameter of the neck portion to a smaller diameter of an elongate member that extends to an end cap; one or more exterior columns disposed around the perimeter of the neck portion; and a finish disposed on the neck portion and configured to threadably receive a cap. 2. The preform of claim 1 , wherein the tapered portion has a wall thickness that smoothly transitions from a wall thickness of the neck portion to a greater wall thickness of the elongate member. 3. The preform of claim 1 , wherein the one or more exterior columns are disposed uniformly around the perimeter of the neck portion. 4. The preform of claim 1 , wherein each column of the one or more exterior columns is in the form of a vertically aligned thicker region of the neck portion. 5. The preform of claim 1 , wherein the finish comprises one or more threads configured to rotatably engage with threads disposed within a cap. 6. The preform of claim 5 , wherein the one or more threads are spaced uniformly around the circumference of the neck portion. 7. The preform of claim 1 , wherein the finish comprises one or more threads configured to rotatably engage with threads disposed within a cap. 8. The preform of claim 7 , wherein each thread of the one or more threads extends along a section of the circumference of the neck portion. 9. The preform of claim 8 , wherein the section comprises substantially 144-degrees of the circumference. 10. The preform of claim 7 , wherein the one or more threads are spaced uniformly around the circumference of the neck portion. 11. A preform suitable to form a container, the preform comprising: a neck portion having an opening to an interior of the preform; a tapered portion including a smooth transition from a diameter of the neck portion to a smaller diameter of an elongate member that extends to an end cap; one or more internal columns disposed withing the opening; and a finish disposed on the neck portion and configured to threadably receive a cap. 12. The preform of claim 11 , wherein the tapered portion has a wall thickness that smoothly transitions from a wall thickness of the neck portion to a greater wall thickness of the elongate member. 13. The preform of claim 11 , wherein the one or more internal columns are positioned at 120-degree intervals. 14. The preform of claim 11 , wherein the neck portion includes a bevel disposed at the opening and configured to enter into sliding contact with a sealing flange of a cap. 15. The preform of claim 11 , further including one or more exterior columns disposed around the perimeter of the neck portion. 16. The preform of claim 15 , wherein adjacent exterior and interior columns are separated by 60-degree intervals around the circumference of the neck portion. 17. The preform of claim 15 , wherein the one or more exterior columns are positioned at specific circumferential intervals between the locations of the internal columns. 18. The preform of claim 15 , wherein the one or more exterior columns are positioned at circumferential locations around the perimeter of the neck portion that coincide with the locations of the internal columns.
