Disclosed are preforms which incorporate improvements in the region of the neck and upper segment of the body to allow the production of lightweight containers, such as bottles suitable for containing water or other beverages. In accordance with certain embodiments, the improvements include a thinner neck finish area than conventional bottles, where the thinner area is extended into the upper segment of the body portion below the support ring. Reducing the thickness in these areas of the bottle allows for less resin to be used in forming the preform and bottle.

What is claimed is: 1. A preform suitable for being blow-molding, the preform comprising: a neck portion comprising an opening to an interior of the preform and a plurality of longitudinally oriented internal columns; a tapered portion comprising a transition from a first diameter of the neck portion to a second diameter of a cylindrical portion comprising an elongate member that extends to an end cap, wherein a wall thickness of the cylindrical portion is substantially uniform throughout the cylindrical portion; a finish disposed on the neck portion and configured to threadably receive a cap; and wherein the neck portion and body portion are a single structure. 2. The preform of claim 1 , further comprising a neck ring comprising a rounded upper portion and a substantially flat lower portion. 3. The preform of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of internal columns comprise three internal columns that are equally spaced around the circumference of the neck portion. 4. The preform of claim 3 , wherein adjacent internal columns are positioned at substantially 120-degree intervals around the circumference of the neck portion. 5. The preform of claim 1 , wherein the neck portion is further characterized by a presence of threads configured to rotatably engage with similar threads disposed within a cap. 6. The preform of claim 5 , wherein, each of the threads extends along a section of the circumference of the neck portion and approaches a neck ring. 7. The preform of claim 6 , wherein the threads of a cap are engaged with the threads, and the cap is rotated in a clockwise direction, the cap advances toward the support ring. 8. The preform of claim 7 , wherein the threads comprise three threads that each begins at a thread start that extends along a substantially 144-degree section of the neck portion. 9. The preform of claim 8 , wherein The thread start is configured to guide the thread into a space, or valley, between adjacent threads of the cap so as to threadably engage the cap with the neck portion. 10. The preform of claim 1 , wherein one or more exterior columns is incorporated into the neck portion. 11. The preform of claim 10 , wherein the exterior columns facilitate a reduced wall thickness within the neck portion of the preform so as to reduce the amount of material needed to form the preform while still maintaining a predetermined structural integrity.
