Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Nanostructures and associated compositions, systems, and methods are provided. In some embodiments, a nanostructure may comprise polymers, intermolecular bonding groups, and a particle. The polymers may be associated with the particle and the intermolecular bonding groups may be associated with at least some of the polymers. In some embodiments, at least some of the intermolecular bonding groups may have a different chemical composition and/or chemical property than the polymers. In some embodiments, nanostructures may reversibly associate with each other via the intermolecular bonding groups to form a material. In some such cases, the intermolecular bonding groups on different nanostructures may reversibly associate with each other. In some embodiments, the nanostructures may be designed, such that the energy required to disassociate at least a portion of the nanostructures in the material is greater than the energy required to dissociate a single association between intermolecular bonding groups.

The invention claimed is: 1. An article, comprising: a particle; polymers; and intermolecular bonding groups, wherein at least some of the polymers comprise a first terminal end associated with the particle, a second terminal end associated with at least one intermolecular bonding group, and one or more repeat units, wherein at least some of the intermolecular bonding groups do not comprise a moiety that is the same as a repeat unit or precursor thereof in the polymers, and wherein a grafting density of the polymers on the particle is greater than or equal to about 0.15 polymer/nm 2 . 2. The article of claim 1 , wherein at least some of the intermolecular bonding groups do not comprise a moiety that is the same as a pendant group or precursor thereof in the polymers. 3. The article of claim 1 , wherein the at least one intermolecular bonding group is associated with the second terminal end via a covalent bond. 4. The article of claim 1 , wherein the at least one intermolecular bonding group is indirectly associated with the second terminal end. 5. The article of claim 1 , wherein the at least one intermolecular bonding group is directly associated with the second terminal end. 6. The article of claim 1 , wherein the particle is associated with the first terminal end via a covalent bond. 7. An article, comprising: a particle; polymers; and intermolecular bonding groups, wherein at least some of the polymers comprise a first terminal end associated with the particle, a second terminal end associated with at least one intermolecular bonding group, and one or more repeat units, wherein at least some of the intermolecular bonding groups do not comprise a moiety that is the same as a repeat unit or precursor thereof in the polymers, and wherein a grafting density of the polymers on the particle is less than or equal to about 1.0 polymer/nm 2 . 8. The article of claim 1 , wherein at least some of the intermolecular bonding groups are polar and at least some of the polymers are non-polar. 9. The article of claim 1 , wherein at least some of the intermolecular bonding groups are non-polar and at least some of the polymers are polar. 10. The article of claim 1 , wherein a number-average molecular weight of the polymers is greater than or equal to about 1,000 g/mol. 11. The article of claim 1 , wherein a number-average molecular weight of the polymers is less than or equal to about 250,000 g/mol. 12. The article of claim 1 , wherein a cross-sectional dimension of the particle is less than or equal to about 1 micron. 13. The article of claim 1 , wherein the second terminal end is oriented away from the particle. 14. An article, comprising: a particle; polymers; intermolecular bonding groups, wherein at least some of the polymers comprise a first terminal end associated with the particle, a second terminal end associated with at least one intermolecular bonding group, and one or more repeat units, wherein at least some of the intermolecular bonding groups do not comprise a moiety that is the same as a repeat unit or precursor thereof in the polymers, and wherein a bond strength between the at least one intermolecular bonding group and at least a portion of the polymers is less than or equal to about 15 kJ/mol. 15. The article of claim 1 , wherein the article further comprises non-bonding polymers, wherein each non-bonding polymer is not associated with any intermolecular bonding group. 16. An article, comprising: a particle; polymers; intermolecular bonding groups, wherein at least some of the polymers comprise a first terminal end associated with the particle, a second terminal end associated with at least one intermolecular bonding group, and one or more repeat units, and wherein at least some of the intermolecular bonding groups do not comprise a moiety that is the same as a repeat unit or precursor thereof in the polymers; and a substrate, wherein at least a portion of the intermolecular bonding groups are associated with a surface of the substrate with a bond strength of greater than 15 kJ/mol. 17. The article of claim 1 , wherein the intermolecular bonding groups comprise a non-polar moiety. 18. The article of claim 1 , wherein the at least one intermolecular bonding group is associated with the polymer only at the second terminal end. 19. An article, comprising: a particle; polymers; intermolecular bonding groups, wherein at least some of the polymers comprise a first terminal end associated with the particle, a second terminal end associated with at least one intermolecular bonding group, and one or more repeat units, wherein at least some of the intermolecular bonding groups do not comprise a moiety that is the same as a repeat unit or precursor thereof in the polymers, and wherein a molecular weight of the intermolecular bonding groups is less than the molecular weight of the polymers. 20. The article of claim 1 , wherein the at least some of the polymers do not comprise a nucleotide.
