Embodiments of the present invention relate to a method for using a device for the positioning of molecules, the devise including a semiconductor substrate including a semiconductor layer and an insulating layer with a plurality of electrodes arranged on the insulating layer forming an electrode layer with a layer of 2-dimensional material arranged on the electrode layer. The method includes applying a first set of control signals to the plurality of electrodes to position a plurality of molecules in a first molecule arrangement and applying a second set of control signals to the plurality of electrodes to position the plurality of molecules in a second molecule arrangement, wherein the second set of control signals is different from the first set of control signals and wherein the device provides a first functionality in the first molecule arrangement and a second functionality in the second molecule arrangement.

What is claimed is: 1. A method for using a device for the positioning of molecules, the method comprising: providing the device, the device comprising a semiconductor substrate comprising a semiconductor layer and an insulating layer, the device further comprising an electrode layer with a plurality of electrodes arranged on the insulating layer and a layer of 2-dimensional material on the electrode layer; providing a liquid solution comprising a plurality of molecules in a solubilized form, the molecules comprising at least one of pentacene, phthalocyanine, fullerene, and ruberene; spraying the liquid solution through a nozzle under compressed gas on the layer of the 2-dimensional material such that a molecule layer is formed directly on a surface of the 2-dimensional material; applying a first set of control signals to the plurality of electrodes to individually position each molecule of the plurality of molecules such that the plurality of molecules collectively define a first molecule arrangement; and applying a second set of control signals to the plurality of electrodes to individually position each molecule of the plurality of molecules such that the plurality of molecules collectively define a second molecule arrangement, wherein the second set of control signals is different from the first set of control signals and wherein the device provides a first functionality in the first molecule arrangement and a second functionality in the second molecule arrangement.
