Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

An ostomy appliance includes a first adhesive having a first surface and a second surface opposing the first surface. The first surface is provided to contact a partly electrically conductive object. The appliance also includes a first layer situated on the second surface of the first adhesive, and a first electrode situated on the first layer and electrically isolated from the first adhesive.

First claim

Opening claim text (preview).

The invention claimed is: 1. An ostomy appliance comprising: a first adhesive having a first surface and a second surface opposing the first surface, the first surface configured to contact and adhere to an at least partly electrically conductive object, wherein the at least partly electrically conductive object is a skin surface of a user; a first layer situated on the second surface, the first layer having a planar surface on a distal side of the first layer; and a non-helical first electrode situated on the planar surface of the first layer, wherein the non-helical first electrode does not penetrate the first layer and is arranged entirely on the distal side of the first layer, wherein a flat surface of the non-helical first electrode is arranged flush against the planar surface of the first layer. 2. The ostomy appliance of claim 1 , wherein the first electrode is a closed curve ring on the first layer. 3. The ostomy appliance of claim 1 , wherein the first electrode is capacitively coupled to the at least partly electrically conductive object via the first layer and the first adhesive. 4. The ostomy appliance of claim 1 , comprising a second electrode electrically isolated from the first adhesive. 5. The ostomy appliance of claim 4 , wherein the first electrode and the second electrode are concentric, closed curve rings to be situated around a stoma. 6. The ostomy appliance of claim 4 , wherein the first adhesive is configured to absorb fluid and the first layer is configured to prevent the fluid from shorting together the first electrode and the second electrode. 7. The ostomy appliance of claim 1 , further comprising an opening being formed through the first adhesive, the opening configured to allow discharge from a stoma to propagate through the opening. 8. The ostomy appliance of claim 1 , wherein the first adhesive comprises hydrocolloids. 9. The ostomy appliance of claim 1 , wherein the second surface is flat. 10. An ostomy device comprising: an adhesive for attaching the ostomy device to skin of a user, the adhesive having a skin-contacting surface; a first electrode and a second electrode, the second electrode being spaced from the first electrode; and a layer having a planar surface, the layer situated between the adhesive and the first electrode and between the adhesive and the second electrode such the ostomy device is configured to form a first capacitor between the first electrode and skin of a user and a second capacitor between the second electrode and skin of a user, wherein the first electrode does not penetrate the layer and is arranged entirely on a distal side of the layer, and wherein the first electrode has a flat surface that is arranged flush on the planar surface of the layer. 11. The ostomy device of claim 10 , further comprising an opening being formed through the first adhesive, the opening configured to allow discharge from a stoma to propagate through the opening. 12. The ostomy device of claim 10 , wherein the first adhesive comprises hydrocolloids. 13. An ostomy appliance comprising: a first adhesive having a first surface and a second surface opposing the first surface, the first surface to contact and adhere to an at least partly electrically conductive object, wherein the at least partly electrically conductive object is a skin surface of a user; a first layer situated on the second surface; and a first ring electrode situated on the first layer, wherein the first ring electrode does not penetrate the first layer and is arranged entirely on a distal side of the first layer, the first ring electrode having a monolithic cross section and having a flat surface that is flat against a planar surface of the first layer. 14. The ostomy appliance of claim 13 , wherein the first electrode is capacitively coupled to the at least partly electrically conductive object via the first layer and the first adhesive. 15. The ostomy appliance of claim 13 , comprising a second electrode electrically isolated from the first adhesive. 16. The ostomy appliance of claim 15 , wherein the first electrode and the second electrode are concentric, closed curve rings to be situated around a stoma. 17. The ostomy appliance of claim 15 , wherein the first adhesive is configured to absorb fluid and the first layer is configured to prevent the fluid from shorting together the first electrode and the second electrode.
