Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

An improved approach to tracking media playback includes tracking logic that is based on abandonment indicators. An abandonment indicator is detected during media playback, such as a user interaction with a computing device that is detected prior to ceasing playback of the media content. Tracking messages are reduced, suppressed, or suspended until an abandonment indicator is detected. After an abandonment indicator is detected, the system quickens, releases, or restart sending tracking messages to a collection system.

First claim

What is claimed is: 1. A method comprising: under control of a physical computing device comprising one or more hardware processors: detecting, in a media player of the physical computing device, a playback of media content; receiving a first event generated by the physical computing device; determining metadata associated with the playback of the media content, the metadata comprising a playback position of the media content; determining that at least the first event matches one or more first abandonment indicators by comparing the first event to at least one indicator type of a plurality of abandonment indicator types; in response to determining that at least the first event matches the one or more first abandonment indicators, transmitting, to an external collection server, a tracking message comprising the metadata; determining that a second event matching one or more second abandonment indicators has not been received within a threshold period of elapsed time from receiving the first event; and in response to determining that the second event matching the one or more second abandonment indicators has not been received within the threshold period of elapsed time, enabling a tracking suppression mode that suppresses transmitting of tracking messages by the physical computing device. 2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising: receiving a third event generated by the physical computing device, wherein transmitting, to the external collection server, the tracking message is in further response to: determining that the third event matches one or more third abandonment indicators by comparing the third event to at least one indicator type of the plurality of abandonment indicator types. 3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising: determining that a third event matching one or more third abandonment indicators has been received after the threshold period of elapsed time from receiving the first event; and in response to determining that the third event matching the one or more third abandonment indicators has been received, disabling the tracking suppression mode that suppresses transmitting the tracking messages by the physical computing device. 4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the metadata further comprises a playback state, wherein the playback state indicates one of: a stopped state, a cancelled state, a complete state, or a playing state. 5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising: determining a type of the physical computing device; and selecting first abandonment indicator logic based at least in part on the type of the physical computing device, wherein transmitting, to the external collection server, the tracking message is in further response to: determining that the first event satisfies the first abandonment indicator logic. 6. The method of claim 1 , wherein transmitting, to the external collection server, the tracking message is in further response to: determining that the first event lasts a threshold amount of time. 7. A method comprising: under control of a physical computing device comprising one or more hardware processors: transmitting, to a physical user computing device, a data collection tag embedded within a first page, the data collection tag comprising instructions configured to at least: detect, in a media player of the physical user computing device, a playback of media content; receive a first event generated by the physical user computing device; determine metadata associated with the playback of the media content, the metadata comprising a playback position of the media content; determine that at least the first event matches one or more abandonment indicators by comparing the first event to at least one indicator type of a plurality of abandonment indicator types; in response to determining that at least the first event matches the one or more abandonment indicators, transmit, to an external collection server, a tracking message comprising the metadata; determine that a second event matching the one or more abandonment indicators has not been received within a threshold period of elapsed time from receiving the first event; and in response to determining that the second event matching the one or more abandonment indicators has not been received within the threshold period of elapsed time, enable a tracking suppression mode that suppresses transmitting of tracking messages by the physical user computing device. 8. The method of claim 7 , wherein further instructions of the data collection tag are further configured to at least: receive a third event generated by the physical user computing device, wherein to transmit, to the external collection server, the tracking message is in further response to: determining that the third event matches one or more third abandonment indicators by comparing the third event to at least one indicator type of the plurality of abandonment indicator types. 9. The method of claim 7 , wherein further instructions of the data collection tag are further configured to at least: determine that a third event matching one or more third abandonment indicators has been received after the threshold period of elapsed time from receiving the first event; and in response to determining that the third event matching the one or more third abandonment indicators has been received, disable a tracking suppression mode that suppresses transmitting the tracking messages by the physical user computing device. 10. The method of claim 7 , wherein the metadata further comprises a media content length of the media content. 11. The method of claim 7 , wherein further instructions of the data collection tag are further configured to at least: determine a type of the physical user computing device; and select first abandonment indicator logic based at least in part on the type of the physical user computing device, wherein to transmit, to the external collection server, the tracking message is in further response to: determining that the first event satisfies the first abandonment indicator logic. 12. The method of claim 7 , wherein to transmit, to the external collection server, the tracking message is in further response to: determining that the first event lasts a threshold amount of time. 13. The method of claim 7 , wherein further instructions of the data collection tag are further configured to at least: capture tracking data regarding a user interaction with the first page; and transmit, to an external server, the tracking data. 14. A system comprising: non-transitory physical computer storage; and a computer hardware processor in a physical user computing device, the computer hardware processor being in communication with the non-transitory physical computer storage and configured to: detect, in a media player of the physical user computing device, a playback of media content; receive a first event generated by the physical user computing device; determine metadata associated with the playback of the media content, the metadata comprising a playback position of the media content; determine that the first event matches one or more first abandonment indicators by comparing the first event to at least one indicator type of a plurality of abandonment indicator types; and in response to determining that the first event matches the one or more first abandonment indicators, transmit, to an external collection server, a tracking message comprising the metadata; determine that a second event matching one or more second abandonment indicators has not been received within a threshold period of elapsed time from receiving
