Process for the preparation of 3-methyl-2-buten-1-al, wherein 2-methyl-3-buten-2-ol is reacted to 3-methyl-2-buten-1-al in the presence of a catalyst, wherein the catalyst comprises a catalytically active metal and wherein the reaction is conducted at a pH of ≤7.

The invention claimed is: 1. A process for the preparation of 3-methyl-2-buten-1-al, wherein 2-methyl-3-buten-2-ol is reacted to 3-methyl-2-buten-1-al in the presence of an oxidant and a catalyst, wherein the catalyst comprises a catalytically active metal and wherein the reaction is conducted at a pH of below 7. 2. The process according to claim 1 , wherein the reaction is performed at a pH of ≤6. 3. The process according to claim 1 , wherein the catalytically active metal is selected from the group consisting of platinum, palladium and gold. 4. The process according to claim 2 , wherein the catalytically active metal is selected from the group consisting of platinum, palladium and gold. 5. The process according to claim 1 , wherein the reaction is performed in the presence of a catalyst, wherein the catalytically active material is on a support. 6. The process according to claim 4 , wherein the reaction is performed in the presence of a catalyst, wherein the catalytically active material is on a support. 7. The process according to claim 1 , wherein the support is selected from the group consisting of carbonaceous and oxidic materials. 8. The process according to claim 6 , wherein the support is selected from the group consisting of carbonaceous and oxidic materials. 9. The process according to claim 1 , wherein the oxidant is selected from the group consisting of oxygen and hydrogen peroxide. 10. The process according to claim 8 , wherein the oxidant is selected from the group consisting of oxygen and hydrogen peroxide. 11. The process according to claim 1 , wherein the reaction is performed at a temperature of 20° C. to 100° C. 12. The process according to claim 10 , wherein the reaction is performed at a temperature of 20° C. to 100° C. 13. A process for the preparation of 3-methyl-2-buten-1-al, wherein 2-methyl-3-buten-2-ol is reacted to 3-methyl-2-buten-1-al in the presence of an oxidant and a catalyst, wherein the catalyst comprises a catalytically active metal and wherein the reaction is conducted at a pH of ≤7, wherein the reaction is performed in the presence of a liquid phase, which contains at least 25 weight-% of water. 14. The process according to claim 12 , wherein the reaction is performed in the presence of a liquid phase, which contains at least 25 weight-% of water. 15. The process according to claim 1 , wherein the reaction is performed under a partial pressure of oxygen between 0.2 and 8 bar. 16. The process according to claim 14 , wherein the reaction is performed under a partial pressure of oxygen between 0.2 and 8 bar. 17. The process according to claim 1 , wherein the reaction is performed in the presence of a liquid phase, which contains at least 25 weight-% of water.
