An article of footwear may include a motorized tensioning system. The tensioning system may include a tensile member and a motorized tightening device configured to apply tension in the tensile member to adjust the size of an internal void defined by the article of footwear. The tensioning system may further include a power source configured to supply power to the motorized tightening device. The tensile member, the motorized tightening device, and the power source may be configured to be removably attached to the article of footwear.

First claim

What is claimed is: 1. An article of footwear, comprising: a lace; a motorized tensioning device configured to control tension of the lace; at least one sensor, coupled to the lace, configured to receive information related to the tension of the lace; a control unit, coupled to the sensor, configured to receive information from the at least one sensor, wherein the control unit is configured to: operate the motorized tensioning device in a normal operating mode and an active operating mode; power down the motorized tensioning device after a target tension has been achieved in the normal operating mode; during the active operating mode, the control unit continuously monitors the tension of the lace after the target tension has been achieved and adjusts the motorized tensioning device to maintain the target tension; and cause the motorized tensioning device to increase the tension in the lace if the tension is less than the target tension and the motorized tensioning device decreases the tension in the lace if the tension is greater than the target tension. 2. The article of footwear of claim 1 , further comprising: an upper portion including the lace to adjust fit of the upper portion against a foot; and a lower portion including a mid-sole and an out-sole, the lower portion coupled to the upper portion at the mid-sole. 3. The article of footwear of claim 2 , further comprising a battery, operatively coupled to the control unit and the motorized tensioning device, positioned in the lower portion. 4. The article of footwear of claim 3 , wherein control unit is further configured to cause the motorized tensioning device to switch among the plurality of preset tensioning modes based on interaction with a user interface. 5. The article of footwear of claim 4 , wherein control unit is further configured to cause the motorized tensioning device to transition among a plurality of transitory states to incrementally increase or decrease an effective length of the lace. 6. The article of footwear of claim 5 , wherein a decrease of the effective length of the lace corresponds to a tightening of the lace and an increase of the effective length of the lace to a loosening of the lace. 7. The article of footwear of claim 6 , wherein a preset tightened state of the plurality of transitory states corresponds to a state including a shortest effective lace length and a preset loosened state of the plurality of transitory states corresponds to a state including a longest effective lace length. 8. The article of footwear of claim 7 , wherein the user interface is configured to increase the tension on the lace based on touching the user interface in a first location and decrease the tension on the lace based on touching the user interface in a second location. 9. The article of footwear of claim 8 , wherein the active mode corresponds to a higher tension on the lace than the normal operating mode. 10. The article of footwear of claim 9 , wherein the active mode corresponds to a lower tension on the lace than the preset tightened state. 11. A method of making an article of footwear, comprising: operatively coupling a lace to a motorized tensioning device for controlling the tension of the lace; coupling at least one sensor configured to receive information related to the tension of the lace; coupling a control unit to the sensor and the motorized tensioning device, wherein the control unit can receive information from the at least one sensor, wherein the control unit is configured to: operate the motorized tensioning device in a normal operating mode and an active operating mode; power down the motorized tensioning device after a target tension has been achieved in the normal operating mode; during the active operating mode, the continuously monitoring the tension of the lace with the control unit after the target tension has been achieved and adjusts the motorized tensioning device to maintain the target tension; and cause the motorized tensioning device to increase the tension in the lace if the tension is less than the target tension and the motorized tensioning device decreases the tension in the lace if the tension is greater than the target tension. 12. The method of claim 11 , further comprising: securing an upper portion to a lower portion, the upper portion including the lace to adjust fit of the upper portion against a foot, the lower portion including a mid-sole and an out-sole, the lower portion coupled to the upper portion at the mid-sole. 13. The method of claim 12 , further comprising positioning a battery in the lower portion and coupling the battery to the control unit. 14. The method of claim 13 , wherein the control unit is further configured to cause the motorized tensioning device to switch among the plurality of preset tensioning modes based on interaction with a user interface. 15. The method of claim 14 , wherein the control unit is further configured to cause the motorized tensioning device to transition among a plurality of transitory states to incrementally increase or decrease an effective length of the lace. 16. The method of claim 15 , wherein a decrease of the effective length of the lace corresponds to a tightening of the lace and an increase of the effective length of the lace to a loosening of the lace. 17. The method of claim 16 , wherein a preset tightened state of the plurality of transitory states corresponds to a state including a shortest effective lace length and a preset loosened state of the plurality of transitory states corresponds to a state including a longest effective lace length. 18. The method of claim 17 , wherein the user interface is configured to increase the tension on the lace based on touching the user interface in a first location and decrease the tension on the lace based on touching the user interface in a second location. 19. The method of claim 18 , wherein the active mode corresponds to a higher tension on the lace than the normal operating mode. 20. The method of claim 19 , wherein the active mode corresponds to a lower tension on the lace than the preset tightened state.
