Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A tensioning system for articles of footwear and articles of apparel is disclosed. The tensioning system includes a tensioning member that is tightened or loosened using a motorized tensioning device for winding and unwinding the tensioning member on a spool. The tensioning system may be used with various sensors to determine how the motorized tensioning device should be controlled.

First claim

What is claimed is: 1. An article of footwear, comprising: a tensioning member; a motorized tensioning device for controlling the tension of the tensioning member; at least one sensor for receiving information related to the tension of the tensioning member; a control unit, wherein the control unit can receive information from the at least one sensor; wherein the control unit operates the motorized tensioning device in a normal operating mode and an active operating mode; wherein the control unit powers down the motorized tensioning device after a target tension has been achieved in the normal operating mode; wherein during the active operating mode, the control unit continuously monitors the tension of the tensioning member after the target tension has been achieved and adjusts the motorized tensioning device to maintain the target tension; and wherein the motorized tensioning device increases the tension in the tensioning member if the tension is less than the target tension and the motorized tensioning device decreases the tension in the tensioning member if the tension is greater than the target tension. 2. The article of footwear according to claim 1 , wherein the normal operating mode is a power saving mode. 3. The article of footwear according to claim 1 , wherein the active operating mode is a sports mode. 4. The article of footwear according to claim 1 , wherein the tension is automatically adjusted in the active operating mode. 5. The article of footwear according to claim 1 , wherein the target tension is determined by a user. 6. The article of footwear according to claim 1 , wherein the at least one sensor is a tension sensor. 7. The article of footwear according to claim 1 , wherein the control unit senses the tension of the tensioning member more frequently during the active operating mode than during the normal operating mode. 8. An article of footwear having an upper and a sole structure, comprising: a tensioning member; a motorized tensioning device disposed on the upper, the motorized tensioning device controlling the tension of the tensioning member; a battery configured to power the motorized tensioning device; at least one sensor for receiving information related to the tension of the tensioning member; a control unit, wherein the control unit can receive information from the at least one sensor; wherein the control unit operates the motorized tensioning device in a normal operating mode and an active operating mode; wherein during the normal operating mode, the control unit powers down the motorized tensioning device after a target tension has been achieved; and wherein during the active operating mode, the control unit continuously monitors the tension of the tensioning member after the target tension has been achieved and automatically adjusts the motorized tensioning device to maintain the target tension. 9. The article of footwear according to claim 8 , wherein the battery is rechargeable. 10. The article of footwear according to claim 8 , wherein the tensioning member is a lace. 11. The article of footwear according to claim 8 , wherein the tensioning member is guided through a throat opening of the article of footwear. 12. The article of footwear according to claim 11 , wherein the motorized tensioning device adjusts the tension at the throat opening of the article of footwear. 13. The article of footwear according to claim 8 , wherein the motorized tensioning device is disposed on a heel of the upper. 14. The article of footwear according to claim 8 , wherein the control unit increases the tension of the tensioning member until the target tension has been achieved. 15. An article of footwear having an upper and a sole structure, comprising: a tensioning member; a motorized tensioning device disposed on the upper, the motorized tensioning device controlling the tension of the tensioning member; a battery configured to power the motorized tensioning device; at least one sensor for receiving information related to the tension of the tensioning member; a control unit, wherein the control unit can receive information from the at least one sensor and store the information; wherein the control unit operates the motorized tensioning device in a normal operating mode and an active operating mode; wherein the control unit powers down the motorized tensioning device after a first target tension has been achieved in the normal operating mode, the first target tension determined by a user; and wherein the control unit continuously monitors the tension of the tensioning member after the first target tension has been achieved and adjusts the motorized tensioning device to maintain the first target tension in the active operating mode. 16. The article of footwear according to claim 15 , wherein the motorized tensioning device automatically adjusts tension in the tensioning member. 17. The article of footwear according to claim 15 , wherein the user selects between the normal operating mode and the active operating mode. 18. The article of footwear according to claim 15 , wherein the user determines a second target tension, the second target tension having a substantially different tension than the first target tension. 19. The article of footwear according to claim 18 , wherein the control unit is configured to store the first target tension and the second target tension. 20. The article of footwear according to claim 15 , further comprising a pressure sensor disposed under an insole of the article of footwear.
