A method and apparatus for controlling transmit power in a wireless local area network (WLAN). For example, a station may receive, from an access point (AP), a beacon frame that includes a field indicating a maximum transmission power for at least one of a plurality of operational bandwidth that the AP supports. The station may determine a transmission power for a signal to be transmitted to the AP based on the at least one of the plurality of operational bandwidths indicated in the received beacon. The station may then transmit the signal at the determined transmission power.

What is claimed is: 1. A method for controlling transmit power by an access point (AP) in a wireless local area network (WLAN), the method comprising: transmitting, to a station (STA), a beacon frame that includes a field indicating a maximum transmission power for at least one of a plurality of operational bandwidths that the AP supports; and receiving, from the STA, a signal at a transmission power determined based on the indicated maximum transmission power for the at least one of the plurality of operational bandwidths indicated in the transmitted beacon frame. 2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising: transmitting, to the STA, a probe response frame that includes a field indicating a maximum transmission power for at least one of a plurality of operational bandwidths that the AP supports. 3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the received signal is an association request frame or a reassociation request frame. 4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the field includes at least one of transmission power step size information, receive power step size information, operational mode information, bandwidth information, or frequency band information. 5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the transmission power step size information includes minimum transmission power information or adjustment step size settings. 6. The method of claim 4 , wherein the receive power step size information includes minimum receive power information, maximum receive power information, receive power adjustment step size settings, receive power sensitivity level information, or clear channel assessment (CCA) thresholds settings. 7. The method of claim 4 , wherein the frequency band information includes a number of simultaneously operable bands or sub-bands. 8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the beacon frame includes a field indicating allowed power setting information for the STA. 9. An access point (AP) comprising: a transmitter configured to transmit, to a station (STA), a beacon frame that includes a field indicating a maximum transmission power for at least one of a plurality of operational bandwidths that the AP supports; and a receiver configured to receive, from the STA, a signal at a transmission power determined based on the indicated maximum transmission power for the at least one of the plurality of operational bandwidths indicated in the transmitted beacon frame. 10. The AP of claim 9 , wherein the transmitter is further configured to transmit, to the STA, a probe response frame that includes a field indicating a maximum transmission power for at least one of a plurality of operational bandwidths that the AP supports. 11. The AP of claim 9 , wherein the received signal is an association request frame or a reassociation request frame. 12. The AP of claim 9 , wherein the field includes at least one of transmission power step size information, receive power step size information, operational mode information, bandwidth information, or frequency band information. 13. The AP of claim 12 , wherein the transmission power step size information includes minimum transmission power information or adjustment step size settings. 14. The AP of claim 12 , wherein the receive power step size information includes minimum receive power information, maximum receive power information, receive power adjustment step size settings, receive power sensitivity level information, or clear channel assessment (CCA) thresholds settings. 15. The AP of claim 12 , wherein the frequency band information includes a number of simultaneously operable bands or sub-bands. 16. The AP of claim 9 , wherein the beacon frame includes a field indicating allowed power setting information for the STA. 17. A first station (STA) comprising: a transmitter configured to transmit, to a second STA, a beacon frame that includes a field indicating a maximum transmission power for at least one of a plurality of operational bandwidths that the first STA supports; and a receiver configured to receive, from the second STA, a signal that include t) at a transmission power determined based on the indicated maximum transmission power for the at least one of the plurality of operational bandwidths indicated in the transmitted beacon frame. 18. The first STA of claim 17 , wherein the transmitter is further configured to transmit, to the second STA, a probe response frame that includes a field indicating a maximum transmission power for at least one of a plurality of operational bandwidths that the first STA supports. 19. The first STA of claim 17 , wherein the first STA is an access point (AP) or a neighbor mesh STA. 20. The first STA of claim 17 , wherein the second STA is a mesh STA.
