A method and apparatus for controlling transmit power in a wireless local area network (WLAN). A station may transmit capability information to another station and may include an indicator that indicates a maximum transmission power for an operational bandwidth that the station supports. The station may receive a signal that has a transmission power based on at least one of the operational bandwidths of the transmitted capability information.

What is claimed is: 1. A method for controlling transmit power in a wireless local area network (WLAN), the method comprising: transmitting capability information from a station that indicates a maximum transmission power for at least one of a plurality of operational bandwidths that the station supports; and receiving a signal, in one of the plurality of operational bandwidths that the station supports, having a transmission power based on the at least one of the plurality of operational bandwidths of the transmitted capability information. 2. The method of claim 1 wherein the transmitting includes at least one of transmitting via a broadcast message, a multicast message, or a unicast message. 3. The method of claim 1 wherein the capability information is transmitted in a probe request message. 4. The method of claim 1 wherein the receiving includes receiving a probe response message. 5. The method of claim 1 wherein the capability information includes at least one of transmission power step size information, receive power step size information, operational mode information, bandwidth information, or frequency band information. 6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the transmission power step size information includes minimum transmission power information or adjustment step size settings. 7. The method of claim 5 , wherein the receive power step size information includes minimum receive power information, maximum receive power information, receive power adjustment step size settings, receive power sensitivity level information, or clear channel assessment (CCA) thresholds settings. 8. The method of claim 5 , wherein the frequency band information includes a number of simultaneously operable bands or sub-bands. 9. The method of claim 1 wherein the receiving includes receiving allowed power setting information in at least one of a broadcast message, a multicast message, or a unicast message. 10. The method of claim 9 wherein allowed power setting information includes at least one of power master (PM) information, operational mode information, frequency band information, transmission power information, reception power information, clear channel assessment threshold information, timing information, measurement information, silent period information, or offset information. 11. A station comprising: a transmitter configured to transmit capability information to another station that indicates a maximum transmit power for at least one of a plurality of operational bandwidths that the another station supports; and a receiver configured to receive a signal, in one of the plurality of operational bandwidths that the station supports, having a transmission power based on the at least one of the plurality of operational bandwidths of the transmitted capability information. 12. The station of claim 11 , wherein the transmitter is further configured to transmit capability information by at least one of a broadcast message, a multicast message, or a unicast message. 13. The station of claim 11 , wherein the transmitter is further configured to transmitter capability information in a probe request message. 14. The station of claim 11 , wherein the receiver is further configured to receive a probe response message based on the transmitted capability information. 15. The station of claim 11 , wherein the capability information includes at least one of transmission power step size information, receive power step size information, operational mode information, bandwidth information, or frequency band information. 16. The station of claim 15 , wherein the transmission power step size information includes minimum transmission power information or adjustment step size settings. 17. The station of claim 15 , wherein the receive power step size information includes minimum receive power information, maximum receive power information, receive power adjustment step size settings, receive power sensitivity level information, or clear channel assessment (CCA) thresholds settings. 18. The station of claim 15 , wherein the frequency band information includes a number of simultaneously operable bands or sub-bands. 19. The station of claim 11 wherein the receiver is further configured to receive allowed power setting information in at least one of a broadcast message, a multicast message, or a unicast message. 20. The station of claim 11 wherein allowed power setting information includes at least one of: power master (PM) information, operational mode information, frequency band information, transmission power information, reception power information, clear channel assessment threshold information, timing information, measurement information, silent period information, or offset information.
