Official abstract text for this publication.
The present invention relates to novel sulfoperoxycarboxylic acid compounds, and methods for making and using them. The sulfoperoxycarboxylic compounds of the invention are storage stable, water soluble and have low to no odor. Further, the compounds of the present invention can be formed from non-petroleum based renewable materials. The compounds of the present invention can be used as antimicrobials, and bleaching agents. The compounds of the present invention are also suitable for use as coupling agents.

The invention claimed is: 1. A method of sanitizing the interior of a metal, aluminum, steel, glass or plastic, food or beverage container in aseptic cold filling operations comprising: contacting the interior of said container with a sulfoperoxycarboxylic acid, by spraying, dipping said container into a solution or filling the container with a solution, wherein the sulfoperoxycarboxylic acid is one or more of the following: for a sufficient time to reduce microorganism population within said container; emptying said container of said compound; and rinsing said container with water, and thereafter emptying the container again so that said fungal microorganisms of the Genus Chaetomium , or Arthrinium, Bacillis or other bacteria, are reduced by more than a 5 log 10 reduction. 2. A method of treating water to remove organisms and to reduce odor comprising, contacting the water with a sulfoperoxycarboxylic acid of the following formula: and/or mixtures thereof. 3. The method of claim 2 , wherein malodorous compounds of nitrogen, sulfurous or phosphorous are reduced to be odor free in said water. 4. The method of claim 2 , wherein said water is from an industrial process stream. 5. The method of claim 2 , wherein the water is from a food processing facility. 6. The method of claim 2 , wherein the food processing facility is one or more of a milk line dairy, a continuous brewing system, and/or a pumpable food system. 7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the industrial processing water is from a process stream from a heater, cooling tower, boiler, and/or retort waters. 8. The method of claim 6 wherein said water is recreational water. 9. The method of claim 6 wherein said water is in a pool, spa, waterslide, fountain, or recreational flume. 10. A medicinal or veterinary antimicrobial product comprising: a composition comprising a sulfoperoxycarboxylic acid, wherein the sulfoperoxycarboxylic acid is: and mixtures thereof, and; b) a carrier. 11. The composition of claim 10 , wherein the microbial population is one or more of fungi, molds, bacteria, spores and/or viruses. 12. The composition of claim 10 whew in said bacteria is S. aureus, E. coli , Streptococci, Legionella, Pseudomonas aeruginosa , mycobacteria, tuberculosis, or phage. 13. The composition of claim 10 wherein said composition is applied to the skin or other mucosal surface. 14. The composition of claim 8 wherein said skin surface is a teat.
