Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A method and apparatus for performing an assembly operation. A tool may be macro-positioned within an interior of a fuselage assembly. The tool may be micro-positioned relative to a particular location on a panel of the fuselage assembly. An assembly operation may be performed at the particular location on the panel using the tool.

What is claimed is: 1. A method for performing operations inside a fuselage assembly, the method comprising: macro-positioning a tool within an interior of the fuselage assembly by driving an internal mobile platform carrying the tool autonomously from a platform level of a tower that is in a selected tower position outside of the interior of the fuselage assembly onto a floor of the fuselage assembly within the interior of the fuselage assembly and into a position relative to a panel of the fuselage assembly; micro-positioning the tool relative to a particular location on the panel of the fuselage assembly within the interior of the fuselage assembly, wherein micro-positioning the tool comprises commanding at least one of an internal robotic device or a movement system associated with the internal mobile platform to move the tool with at least one degree of freedom relative to a platform base of the internal mobile platform to the particular location; performing an assembly operation at the particular location on the panel using the tool; and using a laser tracking system to control at least the micro-positioning of the tool, wherein the laser tracking system is located on the tower outside of the interior of the fuselage assembly such that a number of laser targets on the internal mobile platform are in a field of view of the laser tracking system. 2. The method of claim 1 , wherein macro-positioning the tool comprises: moving the platform base of the internal mobile platform carrying the tool relative to the floor inside the fuselage assembly. 3. The method of claim 2 , wherein micro-positioning the tool comprises: moving the tool relative to the platform base. 4. The method of claim 1 , wherein macro-positioning the tool comprises: driving the internal mobile platform carrying the tool across the floor within the interior of the fuselage assembly. 5. The method of claim 4 , wherein driving the internal mobile platform comprises: driving the internal mobile platform carrying the tool across the floor within the interior of the fuselage assembly to an internal position relative to the panel of the fuselage assembly. 6. The method of claim 4 , wherein driving the internal mobile platform comprises: driving the internal mobile platform across the floor inside the fuselage assembly using a track system comprising a plurality of tracks. 7. The method of claim 6 further comprising: distributing a weight of the internal mobile platform as the internal mobile platform moves across the floor to reduce point-loading on the floor. 8. The method of claim 7 , wherein distributing the weight comprises: distributing a total load of the internal mobile platform substantially evenly using a plurality of support plates in the track system. 9. The method of claim 1 , wherein performing the assembly operation comprises: performing a riveting operation at the particular location using the tool. 10. The method of claim 9 , wherein performing the riveting operation comprises: performing the riveting operation at the particular location using a bucking bar. 11. The method of claim 1 further comprising: receiving a number of utilities at the internal mobile platform through a number of utility cables extending from a cable management system associated with the tower. 12. The method of claim 11 , wherein receiving the number of utilities comprises: receiving the number of utilities at a set of units associated with the platform base of the internal mobile platform. 13. The method of claim 1 further comprising: removably associating an end effector with the internal robotic device associated with the internal mobile platform. 14. The method of claim 13 further comprising: removably associating the tool with the end effector. 15. The method of claim 1 further comprising: using the laser tracking system to control both the macro-positioning of the tool and the micro-positioning of the tool. 16. The method of claim 6 , wherein a track in the plurality of tracks comprises: a plurality of support plates for distributing a weight. 17. The method of claim 1 , wherein the floor of the fuselage assembly within the interior of the fuselage assembly is a passenger floor within the interior of the fuselage assembly. 18. The method of claim 1 , wherein the floor of the fuselage assembly within the interior of the fuselage assembly is a cargo floor within the interior of the fuselage assembly. 19. The method of claim 1 , further comprising: driving the tower having the internal mobile platform on the platform level of the tower across a floor of a manufacturing environment into the selected tower position; and wherein macro-positioning the tool comprises driving the internal mobile platform from the platform level of the tower onto the floor of the fuselage assembly when the tower is in the selected tower position. 20. A method for performing operations inside a fuselage assembly, the method comprising: macro-positioning a tool within an interior of the fuselage assembly by driving an internal mobile platform carrying the tool autonomously across a floor within the interior of the fuselage assembly into a position relative to a panel of the fuselage assembly; micro-positioning the tool relative to a particular location on the panel of the fuselage assembly within the interior of the fuselage assembly, wherein micro-positioning the tool comprises commanding at least one of an internal robotic device or a movement system associated with the internal mobile platform to move the tool with at least one degree of freedom relative to a platform base of the internal mobile platform to the particular location; using a laser tracking system to control at least the micro-positioning of the tool, wherein the laser tracking system is located on a tower outside of the interior of the fuselage assembly such that a number of laser targets on the internal mobile platform are in a field of view of the laser tracking system; and performing an assembly operation at the particular location on the panel using the tool. 21. The method of claim 20 , wherein the floor of the fuselage assembly within the interior of the fuselage assembly is a passenger floor within the interior of the fuselage assembly or a cargo floor within the interior of the fuselage assembly. 22. The method of claim 20 , wherein macro-positioning the tool comprises: moving the platform base of the internal mobile platform carrying the tool relative to the floor inside the fuselage assembly. 23. The method of claim 20 , wherein micro-positioning the tool comprises: moving the tool relative to the platform base. 24. The method of claim 20 , wherein driving the internal mobile platform comprises: driving the internal mobile platform carrying the tool across the floor within the interior of the fuselage assembly to an internal position relative to the panel of the fuselage assembly. 25. The method of claim 20 , wherein driving the internal mobile platform comprises: driving the internal mobile platform across the floor inside the fuselage assembly using a track system comprising a plurality of tracks. 26. The method of claim 25 further comprising: distributing a weight of the internal mobile platform as the internal mobile platform moves across the floor to reduce point-loading on the floor.
