Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A lacing system configured to selectively adjust the size of an opening on an object and allow for the incremental release of the lace within the lacing system. The lacing system can have a reel comprising a housing, a spool supported by the housing, and a knob supported by the housing. The reel can be configured so that cable is gathered in the channel formed in the spool when the spool is rotated in a first direction relative to the housing, and so that cable can be incrementally released from the spool when the spool is rotated in a second direction relative to the housing. In some embodiments, the reel can include a rotation limiter which can be configured to prevent over-tightening of the lacing system and/or to prevent rotation past the substantially fully loosened state.

What is claimed is: 1. A reel based system for tightening an article comprising: a housing having an interior region that is defined by a bottom member and a cylindrical wall that extends vertically upward from the bottom member; a spool rotatably positioned within the interior region of the housing so that the spool is enclosed by the bottom member and the cylindrical wall; a tension member having a first end and a second end, wherein the first end is coupled with the spool so that the first end is windable about the spool as the spool rotates in a first direction within the interior region of the housing and wherein the second end is coupled with the housing so that the second end is not wound about the spool as the spool rotates in the first direction within the interior region of the housing; and a knob that is coupled with the housing and operably coupled with the spool, the knob being rotatable relative to the housing to cause the spool to rotate in the first direction within the interior region of the housing and thereby wind the first end of the tension member about the spool; wherein: the housing includes a channel for the second end of the tension member; the channel is configured to allow the second end of the tension member to be inserted through the channel and adjoin an anchor member that prevents retraction of the second end of the tension member through the channel thereby anchoring the second end of the tension member to the housing; and the channel is configured so that the second end of the tension member is accessible to the spool. 2. The reel based system of claim 1 , wherein the anchor member is a knot that is formed in the second end of the tension member after insertion of the tension member through the channel. 3. The reel based system of claim 1 , wherein the anchor member is a component that is separate from the tension member and that is coupled with the second end of the tension member. 4. The reel based system of claim 1 , wherein the housing is configured so that the second end of the tension member and the anchor member are user accessible from a bottom surface of the housing. 5. The reel based system of claim 1 , wherein the first end of the tension member is inserted through a first lace port in the housing and wherein the channel is a second lace port in the housing that is substantially identical in configuration to the first lace port. 6. The reel based system of claim 1 , wherein the channel includes an aperture that extends through the cylindrical wall so that the second end of the tension member is accessible to the spool. 7. The reel based system of claim 1 , further comprising a pawl mechanism that is configured to allow the spool to rotate in the first direction within the interior region of the housing and to prevent rotation of the spool in a second direction within the housing. 8. The reel based system of claim 7 , wherein the pawl mechanism is further configured to allow the spool to incrementally rotate in the second direction within the housing in response to rotation of the knob in the second direction, wherein incremental rotation of the spool in the second direction causes the first end of the tension member to incrementally unwind from about the spool. 9. A reel based system for tightening an article comprising: a housing having a bottom member and a wall that extends upward from the bottom member; a spool rotatably positioned within the housing; a tension member having a first end that is coupled with the spool and a second end that is coupled with the housing so that the first end is windable about the spool and the second end is not windable about the spool; and a knob that is operably coupled with the spool to cause the spool to rotate in a first direction within the housing and thereby wind the first end of the tension member about the spool; wherein the housing includes an access for the second end of the tension member, the access being configured so that the second end of the tension member is positionable within the access to couple the second end of the tension member to the housing; wherein the access is a second channel or port through which the second end of the tension member is insertable; wherein the reel based system includes a first channel or port through which the first end of the tension member is insertable; and wherein the first channel or port for the first end of the tension member is substantially identical in configuration to the second channel or port for the second end of the tension member. 10. The reel based system of claim 9 , wherein the second end of the tension member is coupled to the housing by forming a knot in the second end of the tension member, wherein the second channel or port is configured so that the knot is not retractable through the second channel or port. 11. The reel based system of claim 9 , wherein the second end of the tension member is coupled to the housing by coupling the second end of the tension member with a separate component that is not retractable through the second channel or port. 12. The reel based system of claim 9 , wherein the housing is configured so that an opening of the second channel or port is accessible from a bottom surface of the housing, and wherein the second end of the tension member is accessible from the opening of the second channel or port. 13. The reel based system of claim 9 , wherein the first channel or port for the first end of the tension member and the second channel or port for the second end of the tension member are each configured so that the spool is accessible to the respective ends of the tension member. 14. The reel based system of claim 13 , wherein the first channel or port for the first end of the tension member and the second channel or port for the second end of the tension member each extend through the wall of the housing so that the spool is accessible to the respective ends of the tension member. 15. The reel based system of claim 9 , further comprising a pawl mechanism that is configured to allow the spool to rotate in the first direction within the housing and to prevent rotation of the spool in a second direction within the housing. 16. The reel based system of claim 15 , wherein the pawl mechanism is further configured to allow the spool to incrementally rotate in the second direction within the housing in response to rotation of the knob in the second direction, wherein incremental rotation of the spool in the second direction causes the first end of the tension member to incrementally unwind from about the spool. 17. The reel based system of claim 15 , further comprising a release mechanism that is configured upon actuation to allow the spool to freely rotate in the second direction within the housing.
