A lacing system configured to selectively adjust the size of an opening on an object and allow for the incremental release of the lace within the lacing system. The lacing system can have a reel comprising a housing, a spool supported by the housing, and a knob supported by the housing. The reel can be configured so that cable is gathered in the channel formed in the spool when the spool is rotated in a first direction relative to the housing, and so that cable can be incrementally released from the spool when the spool is rotated in a second direction relative to the housing. In some embodiments, the reel can include a rotation limiter which can be configured to prevent over-tightening of the lacing system and/or to prevent rotation past the substantially fully loosened state.

What is claimed is: 1. A releasable guide for directing a tension member about a shoe, the releasable guide being operable with the tension member so that tensioning of the tension member causes the shoe to close or tighten about a user's foot, the releasable guide comprising: a base member that is fixedly attachable to the shoe, the base member having a proximal end and a distal end, the distal end including a mounting flange and a upper flange that define a channel, the mounting flange being configured to facilitate fixedly attaching the base member to the shoe; and a tab member that is engagable with the base member and disengagable therefrom such that tension on the tension member is quickly adjustable via engagement or disengagement of the tab member and base member, the tab member having a proximal end, a distal end, and a lace channel disposed between the proximal end and the distal end, wherein: the proximal end has a shape corresponding to a shape of the base member's channel that enables mating engagement of the proximal end of the tab member within the base member's channel; the distal end is configured to be grasped by a user and moved distally to extract the proximal end of the tab member from within the base member's channel and thereby disengage the tab member from the base member; the tension member is non-releasably coupled with the tab member; and the lace channel extends between opposing sides of the tab member and is configured to route the tension member between the opposing sides so that the tension member is slidable within the lace channel. 2. The releasable guide of claim 1 , wherein the base member and the tab member are configured such that, under tension, the tension member exerts a force on the tab member that impedes extraction of the proximal end of the tab member from within the base member's channel. 3. The releasable guide of claim 1 , wherein the mounting flange comprises a sew flange that enables the first component to be stitched to the shoe. 4. The releasable guide of claim 3 , wherein the sew flange has a width that is equivalent to a width of a main body of the base member and wherein the sew flange extends distally from the main body of the base member. 5. The releasable guide of claim 1 , wherein the tension member is operationally coupled with a reel based tension device that is attached to the shoe, the reel based tension device being attached to a first portion of the shoe and the releasable guide being attached to a second portion of the shoe, the reel based tensioning device having a knob member that is rotatable to tension the tension member and thereby increase the mating engagement of the proximal end of the tab member within the base member's channel. 6. A guide for routing a tension member about an article comprising: a base member that is attachable to the article, the base member having a proximal end and a distal end, the distal end having a first configuration; and a tab member that is engagable with the base member and disengagable therefrom, the tab member having a proximal end, a distal end, and a channel disposed between the proximal end and the distal end, wherein: the proximal end has a second configuration that corresponds to the first configuration of the base member's distal end to facilitate mating engagement of the tab member's proximal end with the base member's distal end; the distal end is graspable by a user to move the tab member distally of the base member and thereby disengage the tab member from the base member; the channel extends between opposing sides of the tab member so as to route the tension member between the opposing sides of the tab member; and the tab member engages with the base member so that tensioning of the tension member prevents the tab member from disengaging from the base member. 7. The guide of claim 6 , wherein the distal end of the base member includes a channel within which the proximal end of the tab member is positionable when the tab member engages with the base member. 8. The guide of claim 7 , wherein the base member's channel is defined by an upper flange and a lower flange that extend from the base member's distal end. 9. The guide of claim 8 , wherein the lower flange comprises a sew flange that enables the base member to be stitched to the article. 10. The guide of claim 9 , wherein the sew flange has a width that is equivalent to a width of a main body of the base member, and wherein the sew flange extends distally from the main body of the base member. 11. The guide of claim 6 , wherein the tension member is operationally coupled with a reel based tension device that is attached to the article, the reel based tensioning device having a knob member that is rotatable to tension the tension member and prevent the tab member from disengaging from the base member. 12. The guide of claim 11 , wherein the base member is attached to a shoe. 13. A method of configuring an article with a releasable guide comprising: attaching a base member to the article, the base member including a proximal end and a distal end having a channel; and coupling a tension member of the article with a tab member, the tab member being engagable with the base member and disengagable therefrom to quickly adjust a tension of the tension member, the tab member including a proximal end and a distal end, the proximal end having a shape that corresponds to a shape of the base member's channel and that enables mating engagement of the tab member's proximal end within the base member's channel, the distal end being configured to be grasped by a user to move the tab member distally of the base member and thereby disengage the tab member from the base member by extracting the tab member's proximal end from within the base member's channel; wherein the tension member is operationally coupled with a reel based tension device that is attached to the article and that is configured to tension the tension member. 14. The method of claim 13 , wherein the tension member is slidably disposed within a lace channel of the tab member. 15. The method of claim 13 , wherein the base member's channel is defined by an upper flange and a lower flange that extend from the base member's distal end, and wherein the method further comprises stitching the lower flange to the article to attach the base member to the article. 16. The method of claim 13 , wherein the base member and the tab member are configured such that, under tension, the tension member exerts a force on the tab member that impedes extraction of the proximal end of the tab member from within the base member's channel. 17. The method of claim 13 , wherein attaching the base member to the article comprises attaching the base member to a shoe.
